We are trying to become self sufficient and fully off the grid on a budget. This includes raising chickens, growing vegetables and processing our own food as much as possible.

We raised our own meat (broiler) chickens this year and they turned out to be larger and healthier than commercial chickens. The birds were huge. If you missed that article, you can see it here:

On this day we made our own chicken sausages and burgers using a hand crank meat grinder. I prefer hand crank tools in order to reduce our energy needs.

By making our own burgers and sausages we know what goes in to our meat. Melanie did an awesome job of putting together some spices for our sausages. They turned out very good. We also used mostly herbs that we grow on our own homestead.

We ended up with 15 sausages and 4 burgers just from the legs and thighs of six meat birds. We keep the bones and cook them down to get even more meat off them and to make broth for later use.

We love our solar cooker and use it heavily out on our homestead. This keeps the heat out of the house and reduces our energy needs.

We have also been working a lot in the garden in hopes of providing our own food for our growing family.
