The mafia? Really?
We hadn’t lived in Snowslide Gulch more than 3 months and (as always) we weren’t very sociable:
- no kids to send to school
- we don’t go to church
- we had no interest in joining town politics
The only people we really knew were the neighbors who live across the river. We didn’t know them well but they were friendly enough when we talked to them. They said 'Hello' every time we passed on the street and we could semi-regularly hear the guy shooting to scare off “coyotes that might threaten his chickens” - that seems friendly right? Then they told us that there were rumors going around town that the mafia had moved into Snowslide Gulch. Doesn’t belonging to the mafia imply unlimited disposable cash, illegal firearms, and dark sun glasses?
Well… I only wish we had the cache of cash, sunglasses don’t belong in the Washington rain forests (trust me), and we weren’t the ones shooting into the forest at odd hours of the day and night.
On the other hand, the area did have a problem with druggies breaking into vacation cabins and setting up meth breweries. Maybe there is mafia somewhere up here coordinating the drug trade?
On our side of the river we are completely isolated from the road and public but if someone is persistent enough to cross the river with evil intent they could vandalize us but no one is going to carry off our TV. The idea of wildlife in our backyard is absolutely nothing in comparison to what we faced in the Seattle University district, mafia or otherwise. We’ve never felt safer and our neighbors are super secure from our introverted mafia - if not from the coyotes!
