Bethune House, A Haven for Hong Kong Workers

I must say that one of the reasons why I kept writing Filipino pocketbooks is because I have avid Filipino OFW readers in Hong Kong. They are Filipinos who work away from home and they read pocketbooks so they won't miss the country much. And they had been requesting me to visit them ever since.

I finally got the chance to visit Hong Kong after winning the Sunday Beauty Queen contest where I got free trip for four to Hong Kong. Sunday Beauty Queen is a film documentary by award-winning director Babyruth Villarama about Filipino OFWs in Hong Kong who spend their Sundays or their day-off as queens, like Cinderella. It won the Metro Manila 2016 as Best Film.

The pageant was launched by founder Leo Selomenio to help Bethune House= Migrant Women's Refuge in Hong Kong. They help Filipino OFWs in trouble.

I was supposed to visit them after my book signing but due to Typhoon #8, we were not able to go. Good thing, some of the queens joined me during the booksigning and I sent some of my books to Bethune House.

Bethune House is proof that the lives of our OFWs specially the domestic helpers is not a fairy tale. It is not easy to work abroad, away from your family and serve people with different culture from hours. They experience unfair treatment, they are abused and sometimes sent home without money. So for those who has OFW relatives I hope you will appreciate their hard work.
