The latest reports suggest that the leading Chinese phone manufacturers are looking for alternatives to the Active Matrix OLED (AMOLED) displays, due to concerns that Apple will use a monopolistic position and take advantage of all available supplies of AMOLED displays for its iPhone devices. The three big Chinese brands are also considering using the screen lighted by mini LED panels. According to Digitimes, Huawei, Oppo and Xiaomi plan to accept mini LED-illuminated panels as an alternative to AMOLED for phones, which could be released during the second half of 2018. The companies are already in communication with manufacturers from Taiwan, which should start with mass production of these mini LED light panels from June. It is speculated that Apple could expand the use of the AMOLED panel on its iPhone devices during 2018, using more resources from the Samsung Display AMOLED production. Samsung is currently the only OLED manufacturer for the iPhone X, though Apple plans to include LG Display in the story to reduce its dependence on Samsung.
This year, the iPhone comes with a 6.5-inch OLED display, LG Display starts delivering panels Long-term plans suggest that Apple will accept microLED technology that further enhances the brightness, color saturation and efficiency of the OLED panel consumption.
