From out of nowhere, a Singaporean clocked an Olympic record of 50.83 seconds in 100-meter butterfly swimming on Friday!
Joseph Schooling gave (the island nation) Singapore its first Olympic gold and beat his childhood idol, American legend (retiring) “Baltimore Bullet” Michael Phelps. Phelps was tied for silver together with South Africa’s Chad le Clos and Hungary’s Laslo Cseh (they all clocked 51.14 seconds).
For Schooling, it was the most amazing accomplishment in his life, beating a record set by his own idol.
He credited Phelps for his success. He highlighted that he is a better swimmer now because of the standard his idol set.
It was the last solo race of Phelps after a glittering swimming career with 23 Olympic gold medals. He was stunned yet genuinely very happy for Joseph’s win!
For 24 years, Michael was the standard. Even in the Rio Games, he has proven that he’s still the best. His colleagues are still hopeful that he would reconsider his retirement plans.
For Phelps, this is it.
Joseph Schooling and other new stars have emerged. They are now ready to carry the carry the torch.
Michael is at peace as he walks away with a sense of great gratitude. It was not only because of his (many) medals, but by being an inspiration to many athletes who came after him.
Congratulations Joseph Schooling! We wish for more records and medals for you.
To Michael Phelps, we wish you well and congratulations for having an amazing career!- See more at: http://awinaway.com/2016/08/15/the-day-phelps-got-schooled-by-schooling/#sthash.ByaTyjWH.dpuf
