One photo every day: Early potatoes with onion and herring (361/365) + recipe!

in onephotoeveryday •  7 years ago  (edited)

Hey!

Today's dinner was what I'd call one of Finnish tradition dishes; Earlies with onion and herring. I bought these Gin herrings just to try them. I think they were excellent, but Vera thought they were too sweet.

Yummy!

It's very easy to cook. Ingredients and cooking instructions follow...

You'll need:

  • 1–2kg fresh early potatoes
  • 2tbsp butter
  • 2dl cream
  • freshly cut spring onions or young onion sprouts
  • fresh dill
  • a can of herring

Wash the potatoes and boil them until you can easily push a fork through, don't keep them boiling too long, for they get mushed very easily.

While the potatoes are boiling, melt some butter and boil the onions in it for a while, add cream but do not boil the cream. (Corrected this part, as you *do* need to cook the onions a bit.)

Once the potatoes are done, pour the water out and cut the fresh dill over the potatoes.

Done! Now you can set the dish however with simple accompaniments to your liking.

I hope you like it. :)

Early potatoes, yum! :P

That look like a great meal

Glad Midsommar !

Inte ännu. ;)

Looks delicious and easy enough to prepare! I like dishes that have few items!

Keep showing this kind of plates and you'll have some uninvited guests over soon! lol

Haha! I just imagined the steemians queuing at our front door. ;)

Speaking of cooking, I just finished watching an episode of Madventures where one of the themes is to look for the most disgusting dishes on Earth and try them. In tonight's episode, Riku Rantala had Japanese rotten soy beans and tuna fish eyes.

Natto? I would definitely want to try that. We have a lot of fermented food here in Finland (mämmi and viili comes to mind), so I don't think fermented soy can all be that bad. "Rotten" is a word used just to shock people. ;)

Yes, natto.

It does looks delicious without a doubt ;)

It doesn't just look delicious, it's so good you can't resist seconds.

If Vera is saying that, how can we doubt? It will be delicious and yummmy as it looking.

She might be right on her own right, but I may have a bit different taste. She likes the matjes herring the most, while I prefer something a bit fresher tasting as I think it's spiced a bit weirdly for me. I like herrings that have been cured in wine or vinegar, onion and herbs, and in this case, gin. :)

This look yummy, I should join you. I like the way you listed all the ingredient you used to prepare it.

OH man, you are close, just 4 more days to complete a Year, A vision you started a year ago, A mission you started a year ago is going to complete in just 4 days, congratulations.

Thanks! I'm very excited about it, although maybe a bit saddened that it has to stop too. But I guess I'll have to think of something new when this one is over. :)

It must be very tasty to eat :).

Yes, very. :) Thanks!

Bon appetit friend Jaro. It looks very good that dinner. The photo looks like a food magazine, and provokes even more when you see the details of the presentation of the dish.

yummmy and awesome photo😍👌❤️

Thank you!

gonna try it next time ...looks delicious

You'll love it, definitely! :)

Wow it will be testy recepi for me because of potatoes, i like potato. Really it's a nice recepi and very easy to cook, thanks to share, i will definitely have a try.

I think you might enjoy it! We do. :)

Yes, not only me but also my two kids , kids always love something make with potatoes.

To kids, it may be the herring that proves a bit difficult. At least my boys have problems with it, even I was like that when I was a kid. But when they grow up they'll also love herring and try teaching their kids to eat it too. ;)

I've no idea, when i will make then i can say but thanks to give me an idea that bit difficult to kid, may be they can like it ,like you when you were kid.

Hi gamer. Looks almost to good to eat. Must try some Herrings. I think it is one of only a few things I haven't tried. I have heard about the delicacy with the rotten herrings in a can called surströmming from Sweden.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

I've never tried them surströmming, and I might be too scared to try them, but I do love most cured herring. I wholeheartedly recommend them! :)

Next time I am that side I will try them.

There is a reason why a can of surströmming is customarily opened under water.

Seriously. Is the smell that bad? Funny how it is regarded as a delicacy.

Yes, it's horrible. Part of the process of making it is burying it underground for six months.

I'm not sure where you got that information, but surströmming isn't made by burying it underground at all. It is however fermented in barrels for 1-2 months after which the fermentation is let to continue in tin plated sheet metal cans making the total fermentation process take from 6 months to a year.

I wonder if you mistook it for Hákarl, an Icelandic delicacy that is made from the Greenland shark (Somniosus microcephalus) by first removing its head and intestines and burying the corpse in a gravel pit on a gently sloping hill with rocks on top to squeeze the excess liquids out. Its fermentation takes from six to 12 weeks depending on the season. (In case you were wondering, I freely paraphrased these from the Finnish Wikipedia article.)

I did not mistake surströmming for something made from shark but I probably did confuse the details of the fermentation processes of the two delicacies. :)

Good image and thanks for that recipe mate, I'm going to give that a go, it looks yum. Right up my taste alley.

It's good receipe and beneficial for health

I'll wait for prepare my lovely hubby day after tomorrow. Plz tell me is it very easy preparing @gamer00?
