One photo every day: Moon (244/365)

in onephotoeveryday •  7 years ago

Well hello again! :)

Years ago, when I first tried shooting the moon it was an embarrassing failure, so I decided not to shoot it for a while.

This is my second try.

Moon (cropped)
Cropped it up to create a close-up.

Camera body: Canon EOS 550D
Lens: EF 75-300mm ƒ/4-5.6
Focal length: 300mm
Aperture: ƒ/8
Exposure: 1/100 s
ISO: Dual-ISO 100+200

For shooting this photo I used my other kit-lens, the Canon 75-300mm lens that is absolutely trash. There are a couple of shots I have ever managed to take that were reasonably sharp, but this lens is just awful. There is so much looseness it makes a clanky rattle when shaken and that affects focusing. Once you get a focus, you better not get any wind or other disturbance or otherwise the focus is forever lost. But usually it just doesn't even focus right.

(I'll invest in a proper long lens one of these days that's for sure. Leo can practice with this one.)

original photo
The uncropped original.

This is 300 mm on a cropped sensor camera, so on a full-frame, the moon would look 1.6 times smaller. On mine it is equivalent of 480mm on a full-frame sensor. Now I wonder how nice the moon would look I shot it on a 600mm or 1200mm lens.

It wasn't full moon tonight, but as I was supposed to go and check out the land property in Hollola once again, and found out I couldn't get to it because the road was so small and in so bad driving condition, and I was fast losing light, I decided to go to the grocery instead. But first I had to shoot the moon in the clear sky above.

There's one thing I remembered right now that I should've been vary of: 1/100s on a 300mm lens is probably too slow, even on a tripod if there is any wind. Next time I should try 1/500s. F8 is probably the sharpest aperture the lens can do, so I may need to tweak the ISO.

Anyway, I'll be watching the first episode of the last season of The Bridge now. I'm likely a bit addicted to the series, as I've already watched all the previous episodes. Rooting for Saga, I hope she gets out of prison.

@gamer00,
That's a wonderful photography! Few days back I saw one of the best Moon of my life, but had no chance to take a photography! Coz it needs a good lens! My phone camera can't take it well! So you made a great shot friend!

Cheers~

It looks very good
Lol
a million times better than my first attempt a few days ago
XD

This cropped in nicely! I have quit trying to shoot the moon. Every time it disappoints. Like you, someday I will get some good glass.

Waudi, hieno kuva! Kyl kannatti koittaa uudestaan :)

Yeah it looks a bit out of focus but at least it looks like a moon... I quickly took a picture with my phone and it barely even looked like a moon.

@gamer00 - Sir can I do a little suggestion... Can you please capture a full moon photography? This photography is outstanding & like to see the full moon too Sir...

+W+

I'll try to do that if we get both a full moon and a clear sky at the same time. :)

This is a good picture of the moon you had. Its almost thesame as using a telescope to view the moon. At least, I have aseen it once.

Friend this picture is great, I say I do not know anything about the explanations that you give when you talk about the lenses that you use, but I must admit that in one way or another I am learning something that I did not know.
Thank you for the detail of your explanation, well what you say about the plot of land. That makes me happy, here in Venezuela we have a say.

Everything is going smoothly

Here in Venezuela at the time of writing is 11:55 pm, after seeing your picture, I went to the window and the moon is set so I took this picture with my cell phone, haha I'm not comparing it just wanted to show .. regards

This is a very good picture of the moon. I can't wait to see what you get with a better camera.

When it's cropped it really looks like you made a photo directly from space.
I'm so immersed in work right now so don't remember when I saw the moon last time. Great shot.

I understood very little of the technical talk, with the best camera I ever used being a middling digital camera from about 2011-12. But I am impressed by how well the cropped photo looks

Moro Jaro,Hyva kuva, I like those captures, tbh I failed many times while taking pictures but I've learned so much from it (May be we all learn from our failures?) I'm so bad at nighttime pictures and I find its not that easy though, when was the last time you captured Northern lights?

Mukava, odottaa nähdä auroraa linssistäsi, on mukava päivä :) xx

Toivotaan. Oletko meinannut ruveta muutenkin kuvamaan tähtitaivaan ilmiöitä?

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Even after cropping it so close it still didn't lose too much of the quality.
Do you have a telescope lens on your camera? :D

it's a good picture man but it's a shame that you do not get the picture you really want just because you don't have the equipment you need maybe next time with full moon.

Honestly the moon is pretty difficult to get shots of. Always hard to actually wait for the right day where it is the brightest!

My mother bought a telescope awhile ago and when I introduced her to steemit this is what she used to post about - her photos of the moon through the lens of the telescope. She's using her phone though not a professional equipment and for a phone the photos are quite good. Good job and third try they say is the charm! :)

It’s a beautiful! I love the dark background as you can see so much more detail! Happy weekend!

Wow! Your camera can tayphoto of the moon! Last night the crescent moon was very bright, I wished I could have taken its photo.
I hope that your expedition to look at some land will be rewarding! Are uu going to be farming? What will you use the land for?

Are uu going to be farming? What will you use the land for?

Living first and foremost, but I'm sure Vera will have thought of some use for the large yard already. (She wants more than .5 hectares.)

Does Vera want a large yard for horticulture? It would be a sensible thing indeed for her to use her knowledge of gardening to grow vegetables and berries for the whole family to eat while having fun at the same time.

Hi! Sorry for late reply, I am upcountry and very busy in my forest project. Five hectares are quite big, my friend in England had five hectares. They had an apple orchard, a wood fir the local fixes and badgers, a vegetable garden and roses which are often eaten by the deer!
I think you’ll have s very busy time with five hectares! Lots of work and lots of fun!

Fist time I wanted to take a shot of the moon was a disaster could only see a dark space with a touch of white. But would try it out again tomorrow homing it would be better

awesome.
what a capture. i also want to try that lens.
keep it up my friend..

Your comments about the Cannon 75-300 made me smile because that's exactly how I feel about my Nikon 70-300 :) You're probably right about choosing a faster shutter speed, but I'm not sure how to calculate this. There is a formula... I know that for 24mm on a full frame camera I can shoot the sky at up to 15 seconds, but at 20 seconds I can see the beginning of star trails. At an effective 480mm for the moon, 1/500 or faster sounds right to me.

pleas vote my post

@hendrycimita
