Online Games: A Bittersweet Treat

They say the human body can go without food for 3 weeks, 3 days without water, usually 7-8 minutes without air. Have you noticed that I just listed the 3 essentials mainly needed to support human beings or life for that matter? The question is why, all of a sudden, I decided to pass any science or encyclopedia on you.

What if I were to tell you while conveniently ignoring our evolution as apes, we have evolved to a level where these three things are no longer the only things we need to sustain life. Knowingly, unconsciously, intentionally or not, slowly and steadily, it has made its way as one of the fundamentals of survival. I am of course talking about cell phones and their minions (tablets, smartwatches and others).

If we're all honest with ourselves, I guess 90% of people will agree with me when I say we can't live without our cell phones for more than a minute. Call it a force of habit, being their slave or whatever, but it's the sad truth that none of us want to face. With social media playing a central role in the lives of people of all ages, people seem to instill the need to get "cool" and as a result the need for cell phones has increased dramatically. This vibration and sound of receiving a message has become more imperative than eating, sleeping, and all daily activities.

Phantom notification syndrome (the tendency of someone to believe they've received a notification when they haven't) is not just an observation on young people, but for almost everyone with “Smartphone” these days. It's like we've been programmed to check our phone every minute or two for no suggestive reason. And if it's not to check our zero posts, it's either to take a selfie, or just to console us, we look good, or to play games. In a very rare case, this is a task outside of these 3 categories.

And if we look at it objectively, after messaging / texting / tweeting / Instagram, the next favorite thing for people to do is strain their fingers while playing games.

After WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, this is the common point on all devices. So simple and yet so addicting. The craze for online gambling is such that at one point even I started playing it and can't remember what my next month was like. I mean there can't be a single person who isn't inundated with requests for games on a daily basis. It's hard to say what makes mobile gaming so addicting is dope sound effects, its ever-increasing difficulty as you progress, its straightforward interface, or whatever, is a mystery yet to be solved. But there is one thing set in stone - it will definitely remain a favorite among people for a long time to come.
