Steemit Open Mic 100 - Torn by Natalie Imbruglia

in openmic •  6 years ago

Hi guys!

Well, being a homesteading, homeschooling Mama of 4 kids, including a very active toddler, I don't get much time to myself. If I even look at a guitar or ukulele, it seems one of the boys is on my lap tinkering with it or needing a snack or diaper change. I actually did get around to posting one entry to the Open Mic Challenge about 5 months ago. It was a rare night where I let the kids watch cartoons and play video games with their Dad so I could get the recording done. Even then, it took about 3 hours to get a decent take.

My daughter @Tonks has been posting ukulele videos lately and even asked me to do a duet together which was a lot of fun and made me realize how much I miss playing and performing. So, I decided I would post an entry. The challenge is that I'm trying to record while the kids are asleep so it's not full voice, or full playing, but it's what I can do at the moment. I guess I'm "crowbar-in' it!"

As I was sitting in my garage, playing through some of my favorite songs, it reminded me of nights when friends and I would just sit around chatting, and lightly strumming until one of us chose a tune that we all just had to sing. This was one of those tunes. I'm showing my age here, but I also used to perform this cover with my old band around that time. Anyway, it just brought up fond memories and thought it's not as polished as I'd like, just think of it as a casual evening hanging out with a friend.

Here is my entry for Week #100 of the Open Mic Challenge. My quiet so as not to wake the sleeping children version of Torn by Natalie Imbruglia.

I chose @Crowbarmama as a handle because I believe in doing the best you can with what you have on hand. The crowbar is a multi-purpose tool. You’ll notice my photography is a bit rough, my grammar is not the most polished, but as a homeschooling, homesteading mama of 4, if I waited to take my photos until the light was perfect or re-edited my posts a 5th time ( I shoot for 3 drafts), I would never get a post out!

Don’t sweat the small stuff, just Crowbar it!

@happycrazycon Aw, thank you so very much!

WoW crowbarmama you rock. Yourea crowbarqueen for me ! Love love loved it!

Thanks so much! I really did have fun playing it.

Gorgeous!! This tune brings back another time for me to! Isn't it amazing how music gives one the ability to time travel :D

Thanks so much! And as for time travel, I absolutely agree! Music is magical that way. I loved performing this song. I remember even trying to get my hair to look like hers! 😂. I think I was 22 here! Screenshot_20180826-091709~2.png

Awww beautiful! You still look the same Mama!! ❤️

@crosheille 😘Girl! You still look like you should be carded for alcohol, but there you are with 5 kids! And given your knowledge of the song and working at Limited during that time, you've got to be close to my age! But you certainly don't look it! ❤️

Awwww thank you @crowbarmama! ☺️🤗

I’ll be 37 on September 3rd!! I honestly can’t believe I’ll be 40 soon, it still feels like I just graduated from high school! But of course having 5 kids brings me back to reality! 😂

@crosheille Absolutely, kids are a blessing and also an anchor- not in a bad way, just grounding us a bit. 😆

Haaa yes absolutely!!! 😄

Oh wow! So beautiful! You haven’t changed much since then! Still looking young and beautiful!!

@wildwanderer - Ah, you're too kind... The difference I used to wake up that way, now it takes a full night sleep, makeup, lighting, camera angle and a dirty lens to hide the wrinkles! 😆😆😆

😂🤣

Good choice @crowbarmama
Enjoyed it :)

Sing it sister! Although, as is often the case, I couldn't get it to play on dtube waaah

Why thank you @meesterboom! I did include the YT link below the article just in case, but you might enjoy this duet that I did with my daughter. It's on dLive.

Oh lord, I am a doofus. I never noticed the yt link!

I am watching it now tho, smashing!

Thanks. It's not my best, but I felt I just had to get something out there to get the ball rolling. Hoping to start entering weekly... If I can find a way to sneak away from the kids so I can sing above a whisper then I think that would help. 🤣🤣 And if my exhausted mommy brain can keep from forgetting how the songis actually supposed to end! 😜

Hahaha, yeah, those are the hard bits for sure!!

@meesterboom I'm not caught up on all your posts lately (except that rascal, Ol' Boomy that is!) how's the weaning coming along? The husband never slept well during those times. He would often say, "oh just give him/her some boo-boo and we'll try again tomorrow!" 😆

Haha, I often say that although to be fair it is coming along quite well. He is eating like a champ these days!

@meesterboom Good! My kids were all great eaters, but they all nursed to sleep. It's just so convenient! Some might call it lazy parenting, but it ensured I got some sleep! 😆

wow coincidence much haha.. I did this song a few days after you but for the karaoke contest.. I didn't see this video till now hehe..

@vincy I saw that! It was great! Thought I commented, but sometimes I put in earbuds while nursing the baby to sleep so I can watch & listen, but hard to type. 😆

Thanks for sharing with us. I really enjoyed this cover. Well done :).

@gray00 Thank you! It was fun playing an old favorite. I think I'll dig around for more tunes from that time period.

Love the way you're "crowbarring" it, mama!

@passion-ground Thank you! I know it's not my best work, but if I can just get in the habit of posting an Open Mic entry weekly, then I'll be motivated to practice more and it will all fall into place, right? Sort of putting the cart before the horse, but sometimes thinking outside the box gets results! 😉If not, at least I'll get to make music a priority in my life again. 😀

Better than original!

@fullyhuman - Thank you. It wasn't my best work, but it brought me so much joy that I just focused on that. Thank you for stopping by!

Ah yes this really does bring back memories!! I was working at the Limited in our Mall when I was in my twenties and this song came on the overhead all the time. You did a lovely job! I was just telling my MIL I want to learn how to play her guitar. I enjoyed your open mic! What a beautiful background! Thanks for sharing your voice and talents with us! 😊

@crosheille Thank you!!

The Limited! Yes! Used to love to shop there for both work and show clothes! 😀 I bet you had some fun there!

You should totally learn guitar! It's not hard once you start letting yourself get into it.

I've been playing with effects for my daughter's ukelele posts and we bought some green flannel to use as a greenscreen so I wanted to play with it a bit. Thanks for noticing! 😘

Oh cool! Yes I loved shopping there so much back then that I figured why not work there and get the discount? Haaa, it was fun!

Oh cool! It was a really neat effect!

I love this song and your version of it ! You have such a nice voice :)

@tibfox Aw, thank you! I used to really enjoy belting it out in front of a live band back in the day, but it was fun to tinker like this too.

Ah that brings up memories.. I love natalie imbruglia :) well done :)

@anouk.nox Thanks! Yes-it takes me right back too. Thanks so much for stopping by.

@c-squared Thanks! Wow, that is so cool! I've been on the platform since January and just recently learned what curating really means. I still am not 100% certain I've got a good understanding, but I'm eager to check out what y'all are doing. Thanks again!

Hi, I really like your interpretation, tell me how you did to have that background? I mean what program do you do that is green screen but what program did you use greetings and thanks

Hi there! I have also used Davinci Resolve for green screen effects, but this was done using PowerDirector 16 for Windows.
