OpenMic Night Contest Week 4: "Back To Black" [Amy Winehouse Ukulele Cover]

in openmic •  8 years ago  (edited)

This has become one of my favorite songs to sing. I love the pain in all of Amy Winehouse's songs, which is also so tragic considering the world lost her way too soon.

This is amazing. I never realised how awesome a songwriter Amy was before her death.

Your version is just as powerful.

I think this song has a pain to it that we have all felt in love with someone who takes advantage of us - even the most successful people romantically have felt this pain.

That is why this is such a perfect song.

Also one would think that a ukulele would somehow diminish the melancholic tone of the song but it fits just perfectly. I got shivers just listening to you play it and singing. It was so powerful.

Simply beautiful. I hope everyone listens to this.

You are so talented.

@thecryptofiend Wow. I am incredibly humbled by your compliments, and very much feel the same way about Amy's songs. I feel...well, completely and utterly humbled that you felt my version was as powerful. Thank you so much.

Also--when I put the uke to it, I wasn't sure how that would be received, but I liked the contrast of tones and felt that it almost shed a spotlight on the pain in the lyrics.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Thank you again.

Edit: If the promotion was also you, thank you so much. Humbled again.

Yes it was me with the promotion. Totally deserved I just hope it makes a difference.

me encanta

muchas gracias! 💚

Thank you, @music-trail! Much appreciated!!

Nice work on the Uke - it worked well with the song :)

@rgeddes Thanks!! I wasn't sure how it'd play out, but I'm glad people seem to dig it. I like utilizing the uke as a sad instrument rather than a light, happy one.

The Ukulele was originally used for Jazz believe it or not.. Amy obviously had her own variation on standard jazz . One acoustic guitar and you would be hard pressed to reinterpret it. I think the Uke was the best idea in the world for this song (you also used a bigger Uke rather than a soprano). A few of us play a few instruments so its cool to see the variety. Here is my one from last week I did on Uke - https://steemit.com/openmic/@rgeddes/original-ukulele-instrument-only-week-3

Keep playing - this place needs a lot more music! Great job!

@rgeddes That's awesome info! I'm still new to the uke, and since it is not my primary instrument, I've been learning blues scales all over that thing, so honestly it doesn't surprise me that it was used in jazz music. Since it always has a seemingly light connotation as an instrument in general as result of its use in island and reggae music, I was really surprised how much I enjoy using it in minor ways rather than major, and I really enjoy the sadness I'm finding in uke tones. So good.

That was awesome! Thanks for entering again. Love to hear you play. Couple of reminders.
