Open Mic Songwriters Challenge

Thanks to some generous sponsorship from @meno we are hosting the Open Mic Songwriters Challenge and the winner will win a free guitar with hard case.

  • Do you like to write songs?

  • Can you write a song a week for 8 weeks?

  • We will provide 8 different weekly themes

  • Enter the Open Mic Songwriters Challenge

  • Give a high five to @meno

  • Make some great music and you may win a new guitar!

This is the 3rd week in this 8-week challenge. If you're just getting here and want to enter don't worry, be happy. You still have a chance to win that guitar. So get your jam on for this week's theme.

The theme for week 3 is:

Stolen Soul

To enter week one you need to write a song that is about or involves the phrase Stolen Soul.

It can be a metaphor or a lyric in the song as long as the song somehow relates to the theme Stolen Soul

To qualify as an entry to this week's challenge all the rules listed below must be followed and it must be a new song written for specifically for this challenge.

The first tag of your post must be: openmic

The second tag of your post music be: openmicsongwriters

The deadline to submit your entry is Monday. 11th of December 2017. Please have the song posted by then so we have time to review them all.

@meno graciously offered to sponsor this fantastic, music-making, creativity-sparking, songwriting challenge by providing a new guitar with hard case to one, lucky winner!

The contest will run for 8-weeks and each week we will provide a theme. You will write a new song about or related to that theme.

This challenge will require you to write up to 8 new songs, one per week. This is the challenge.

We will provide the theme each week and make it a bit uncommon so songwriters will not be able to pull previously written songs from their repertoire.

They will actually have to write a song based on the theme we provide and have a little less than a week to write each song.

So, are you up for the challenge? A shot to win that guitar?

Keep reading to discover how it works.

Open Mic Songwriters Challenge Rules

Following these rules is very important so your posts can get curated, upvoted, and seen by the Open Mic community.

  • The contest will run for 8 weeks. Each week will have a new theme. Songwriters will write one new song each week using the theme we provide.

  • Songwriters can join at any time, but the sooner you join the more points you'll accumulate, making your chances to win a little better. Don't worry, be happy.

  • Submit Original Music Written For This Challenge Only and related to each week's theme that we'll provide.

  • You can enter Steemit Open Mic and the Open Mic Songwriters Challenge with the same entry. Just say it is for both at the start of your video. Ad a link to your post to both contests. Better yet, make 2 posts, one for each contest.

  • No covers, no parodies, or no cover versions will be considered as a valid entry.

  • You can sing in any language but the lyrics must be posted on your post in the language it is sung in plus in English using Google Translate.

  • OpenMic Songwriters Challenge Week 3 must be the start of the title of the post, this is key so that judges can easily find the entries.

  • You must say “OpenMic Songwriters Challenge Week 3” at the beginning of your video so we know you are really playing live for us for this contest (Adding an edit to a prerecorded video just to add the words is not good enough. It must be said out loud by the person performing the song just prior to performing it. Recording the words and editing it to the beginning of a video still does not prove it was really you)

  • Live performances only. No studio recorded tracks. Recording quality is not being judged. You can record it on your phone.

  • openmic & openmicsongwriters must be your first and second tag respectively. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT

  • Add a link to your entry post to the comments of the contest post published by @luzcypher so we know you entered. That's this post.

  • Lyrics must be included in your post If the song is sung in another language, the lyrics must be posted in both English and the language it is sung in.

  • Upvote the Open Mic Songwriters Challenge weekly post posted by @luzcypher

  • Give a high five to @meno because this is SO COOL!

  • All songs must be about the week’s theme, entries not related to the theme will not be considered as valid.

What About The Prizes?

All rules must be followed to qualify for the prize.

Winner of the contest takes home a brand new Grace Harbor Acoustic/Electric Guitar with a hard case. You can have a look and a listen to this beautiful guitar in this video.

Shipping is included in the Continental United States. If you reside outside the U.S. he will ship it to the courier of your choice and you will need to pay any other import or shipping charges.

I had a lot of fun with this one! My lovely wife, @carrieallen was kind enough to help with singing, and our guitar-playing friend Tom joined in as well.

It's a folk ballad... You know, one of those devil stories... ;)

Nice harmonies! Proper bluegrass band right here, I'd say. How fun. Digging your whole sound, the story... and yeah, again, the harmonies are slammin'!

Thanks,Cabe! I worked pretty hard on this one, even though I started writing it just moments after the topic was released.

We certainly had a lot of fun with our little rehearsal/recording session. :)

Maybe I should grab a banjo... Rhythm banjo is a thing, right?

Heres my crack at it! Its all a bit manic, but something came together I think! haha. I hope you guys like it :D

maybe the best song this week... maybe... Just going through a bunch now. It's definitely the one that made me happiest so far, I'll say that much.

Were a vaudeville performer in another life?! You can bring it back, man, for the new Wild West!! Fantastic song and performance and ghoulishly green face. #winning

AHH THANKS GUYS! This support means the world. Having just looked up vaudeville I think you could possibly be right Cabe! Maybe we should organise a Steemit Vaudeville night in Nirvada or something....I'll get on the honkytonk and you get on the strings and then @Jaybird can swing through the doors and we'll all stop and stare at him while he swaggers up to the bar and orders himself a whiskey before pulling out a flying V and rocking the house (either that or he shoots one of us dead, and a bar-room brawl breaks out before he leaves with the landlords daughter)

lol! Yes, so I'll get busy growing out an epic cowboy mustache. It'll toughen me up for the role of "guy who gets shot dead." And you grow your hair long so you can play the landlord's daughter. Maybe @jaybird can start riding horses on the regular, in order to get that swagger down. Sounds like a proper Vaudeville act to me! :)

Hi guys, another week, another fun creative process. Thank you for this experience!

Your sound here is so pretty. I love the way your ascending guitar riff compliments your low voice so sweetly in the build-ups, and I like the shifts too, like waves caressing the beach.

Yay!! new week , new entry!! i am so excited for this week in particular because i think this is the best song i have submitted so far! hopefully you guys will like it as much as i do!

Nice one!

thanks L!! I am glad you liked it! ♥

Your enthusiasm (and gratitude) is exemplary. It really is a joy and a gift to participate in the Open Mic, and you remind me of this, week after week. PLUS, your song here is slammin', sister! Nice work.

Here's a song inspired by the story of Janis Joplin, for this third round of the songwriting challenge.

I love how most of us freeze right before we say "Steemit Open Mic Songwriter's Challenge" hahah. what a mouthfull, ruins like 3 out of every 4 takes before I even sing lol.

LMAO... You're too funny @jaybird, and so right! Ha-haaa!

So true. I'm finding it's slightly easier to get it right with the Songwriter's Challenge (rather than the ordinary Open Mic) just because it requires so many practice rounds! Many many missed takes on my end, since we started this. We really oughta start an Open Mic Bloopers Challenge, sharing our worst outtakes.

ahah yea that would be hilarious. I've made many, deleted most of em tho.

This week is going to be awesome! Bring on those devil songs... :)

I link you link is missing

LOL is a link really required?

This is how i break through, rather this is my break through, watch the space 😁 😁

Very catchy tune! Cool chord progression! I like the flow, kinda happy despite the lyrics! I approve ;)

Yeah I think that the deeper message of the song is positive as well. Peace!

<3

@Isaria, why don't you jump in... you are so talented, its almost criminal you are not part of this.

Sounds like a lot of BLUES could be made out of this one. When are the happy songs coming haha ;)?

hmm... food for thought next go round, Doc! I'll be sure to put my two cents in..

I usually write sad songs, so it will be fun. Always harder to write a happy song haha

Beware what you wish for, Doc! I'm certain that you'll rise to the occasion no matter what... :-)

Happy is a real struggle for me LMAO

Haha. I think for everyone.

Hey! un saludo para todos, aquí les dejo mi composición para la semana 3, Espero les guste, ¡bendiciones y suerte para todos!

https://steemit.com/openmic/@pechichemena/open-mic-songwriters-challenge-week-3-stolen-soul-reflejos-original-song

Thank you for the space to share my music , so nice to see so many original music submitted here :)

Great theme, man! I don't know if I have time this weekend to upload, but already wrote the chorus...

You guys are doing great, @fitzgibbon!

Cool

First time posting here so I hope I'm doing this right... My entry for this week's songwriting challenge - it was so much fun to try something totally out of my element so I hope you like it! https://steemit.com/openmic/@anniemacleod/openmic-songwriters-challenge-week-3-stolen-souls

Hmm I guess I did something wrong because everyone else has a big fat video thumbnail visible and I don't . Any advice?

Hi!
The way you do that is... besides posting your link you also embed the video just like you did on the original article... do you know what i mean?

Sort of? I'll try again.

Do you remember that when you created the post.. in order to upload the video you had to copy and past a code so that it can get embeded on your post and people can play it right there on your post rather than going to a link elsewhere?

That same code is the one you would post here on the comments bellow the link to your original post

Annie, it's not necessary to also drop your video here within this comment thread - so no worries... In fact, by just providing the link to your actual entry as you did here, you get people directly over to your personal blog, where they can read your accompanying post, follow you if they'd like, and directly vote for your entry - all of which are more readily bypassed simply by listening to the video right here and then moving along. Hope that made some sense... :-)

It did, thanks!
