Steemit Open Mic Week 132: Fields of Athenry

in openmic •  6 years ago  (edited)

For Open Mic this week I have gone for something a little different. I have been known to play some folk music, but one of our pub musicians sings this song when she comes and I get to play guitar for her.

I am not sure if I had heard The Fields of Athenry previously, but it seems to be very popular in Ireland and also with Celtic fans. It is the story of a young man who is deported to Australia for stealing corn during the Great Irish Famine in the 19th century. It is not a really old song as it was written in the 1970s.

I hope you enjoy my rendition. I am not aware that I am at all Irish, but some great music comes from the Emerald Isle.

I played this on my Taylor guitar that was paid for with Steem earnings.

Here are the Ireland soccer fans singing it at a match.

Thanks again to @luzcypher for doing this contest every week for well over two years. @pfunk is a witness who supports it and deserves your vote for that.

Update: Youtube managed to detect that this is not an original song. Their screens for assigning copyright are a horrible mess. I don't mind not making anything from it through them as I never made anything there anyway.

Tonight I am watching all the performances with my daughter and I am so happy to share you with her. I said "This guy is one of my absolute favorites" Love your spirit my friend you rock. I could listen to you sing all day. mwah mwah mwah

Wow, that's high praise! Tell her I appreciate it.

Sorry I missed it.

Very nice! Although it is newer, this is the exact type of song I think of when I consider folk music. Thanks for sharing!

Folk music tends to tell stories and this does that well. I was surprised at how popular it is in certain communities.

I love this song so much!
Thank you for singing it @steevc!

Nice job @steevc

You have a unique style, and I really enjoy listening to your performances!

Cheers. I know I'll never be a great singer, but I'm having fun anyway.

I think you're a great singer :)

Keep on sharing your passions my man, we love you! 💖

I'm on @partiko and I've got lots of links in the post but I can't see one to yr song.

The only rendition I've heard was by 3 drunken teachers on the last day of summer term about 14 yrs ago - after 8 hrs binging, standing on the tables in a beer garden, fists in the air - I think it prompted me to leave.

Quite unusual for Reigate on a Tueaday evening.

It was a sure sign of things deteriorating!

I did an embedded Youtube link and it seems Partiko does not render that :(

This may work for you

Cheers! Very nice,

I did enjoy it!
