Steemit Open Mic Week 72 – 'Home Tonight' (Original Song)

in openmic •  7 years ago  (edited)

I wrote this song in early 2011, not long after returning from a year-long, solo journey through India and Nepal. Coming 'home' was hard – I wasn't sure where that was anymore.

Divorce had preceded my trip, and I was acutely aware of how alone I was in that moment. It wasn't necessarily a bad thing – simply the truth in that moment. This song showed up as a bit of an expression of my inner dialogue at the time.

I was trying to pull myself up by my bootstraps – to remember that I was perfectly capable of navigating this life on my own.

A rough recording of this song became a comfort to a friend as she was passing and was then used for a slideshow presentation at her funeral. You just never know how you'll touch someone's life...

Big Love,
xo Zippy

I know – there are no secrets in this life
no hidden meaning that I will someday find
no one's gonna come and make it all alright
I've got to find my own way home tonight

there's a bitter wind blowin'
and I'm comin' home
home tonight....home tonight

too long I've been wanderin' down this lonely road
draggin' my feet with heavy things, I would not let go
searchin' for ways to fix me, and to make me whole
but my soul's not broken, no...

it's just old...and tired of walkin' alone
but I'm alright. I'll make it home
home tonight...home tonight

so I open the window and stretch my arms wide
I'm ready to leave it all behind
like a little sparrow, unfolding for flight
I trust these little wings to carry me, oh so high

fly – little bird, fly
all the way home
home tonight...home tonight

I'm comin' home tonight
home tonight

wow those guitar slide noises are incredibly ambient for the song,

Ha! I'm glad you appreciate them. I considered trying to soften their presence, but – really – I'm trying not to be so damn perfectionistic, so I decided to just leave 'em be. :)

That song is so incredibly beautiful it just melt me. Your voice has a special tone that connects something between heaven and earth. I feel home listening to you. Thank you so much.

This really is just the sweetest comment ever. THANK YOU!

Such a deeply touching song and a quite lovely performance!

Glad to know you appreciate it @passion-ground. I'm experimenting with letting things be imperfect. I've been wanting to record and share this one for the last few weeks – glad I finally did!

Surprisingly, perfection is often found in the "imperfect." Keep experimenting! :-)

Great song and beautiful voice

Thanks so much @luzcypher! Once again – I'm so grateful to you guys for inspiring me to pick up my guitar, pull out my bluebird and share with all of you. It's long overdue...

So delicately vulnerable and beautiful. Your voice is very different from Tracy Chapman's, but you have that same heart-beating-just-behind-the-veil-of-your-voice thing that made me always just love her. Bravo. You should win this week.

Nice mic and video set up as well - wish you could help me with mine!

Miss @kayclarityyour words humble me. In truth, you're a significant part of why I felt compelled to start entering. I greatly admire your musicianship – your crystal-clear, expertly controlled voice – your ease and grace on camera – the universality of your unforced lyricism – your emotional story-telling. As such, your reflection carries more weight.

I so appreciate that vote of confidence. I wouldn't expect to win, however. Partly because I placed 3rd with my first ever entry and this is only my 2nd time! ;)

I would love nothing more than to be near enough to record you! I know that I've got a rare advantage in that I have all the right equipment and the built-in know how as a photographer. Perhaps you'll pop through Portland someday and we can do a little collab. ;)

Thank you so much for taking time to listen.

That was beautiful Zippy @zipporah !

Thank you @nathankaye!❤️

This is very lovely, I'm glad I stumbled on this performance!

Absolutely incredible ^___^!!!!

Thank you @keirani-gaming. :)

Woo, your high-note at 1:22 is paradise. The sound is heavenly as a whole. This feels classic to me, like red polka-dots on a country dress.

Helllo, Cabe! I love that image – I'm a red polka dot dress. :)

angelical voice... you've got a fan here!

Thank you @pedromrmourato! Much appreciated...

this is beautiful :) ! I loved your voice and performance!

Thanks so much @pechichemena! I'm glad you like it. <3

Nice voice you gat. This song is really good

Thanks @chijokecj!

This is great! Good song, a lot of emotion there.love that blue bottle Mic too!

Much appreciated @soundscape. :) It's actually a Bluebird – related, still from Blue, but not quite the same as the blue bottle.

Are you going right into Protool or Logic? If so let me know.... would offer to mix it for you...

WOW! That was massively powerful! It got me right in the feels!
Your voice is lovely in it's honesty of presentation. With it's bit of vibrato, it reminds me a bit of Joan Baez.

What a lovely compliment! I've actually heard that one before – more than once! Must be somethin' to it. :) Thanks for listening!

Ah, talented in music and photography! Nice! Is that the Bluebird mic I spy?

Uuuhhh, Yep! Secret's out. ;) And BOOM! You're spot on! I bought this mic during a bout of super determination to get all my little songlettes recorded – if for no other reason than to keep them safe. For a minute, I enjoyed recording roughs and adding harmonies. Then, my photography took over again. So, my bluebird has been packed away for years. Grateful to Steemit for inspiring me to bring it back out.

You can check out some of those rough recordings here. ;)

Maam zipporah you are simply amazing. What kinda camera or phone did you use cause the quality of your video is just a bomb

Miss @etemi!! Girrrrl – you're amazing! Congrats on your well-deserved win! ;)

Truth is – I'm a pro photographer, sooo...I have really expensive gear and the ability to make stuff look yummy. Video quality is good because it was shot using a $3000 camera and $1500 lens! LOL! Glad you appreciate it.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Wow. Man thats very expensive.. Holy shit Selling my 120 Steem wont get my that.. Lool. And yes thanks maam was a priviledge been On the list with you, the other time I think I came 5th you was on the list too. Haha. Seems you are my lucky charge .. Whats the Name of the studio mic you using

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Oh!! That’s awesome! Yeah — I’ve only entered twice. First time I placed 3rd! Guess we’re on a lucky streak together! ⭐️ It’s a Bluebird mic from Blue Microphones. 😉

Wow, yeah thats true. The rule is if you win a week you cant win the following week, there is spacing dont know for how long. You spaced your entry, after the first week you won. So from the progression, the next position for you will be to take first. Haha. 😇😇.. Let me check how much it cost, cause I am budgeting for a studio mic and a camera maybe not of your quality tho, but lets start from somewhere. Would check out for the name of your mic now. Thanks

Nice song is great! congratulations, i will follow you , im musician too if you wanna see me last post her https://steemit.com/openmic/@palmidrummer/steemit-openmic-week-72-lumbra-cali-y-el-dandee-drum-cover

What a beautiful song and voice! ❤️

Thank you kindly @irreverent-dan! :)

beautiful voice great feeling, what a beautiful song is still this way, please, keep bringing us such good material, follow us come and see our input this week, hugs and love

Much appreciated @funkmedia! I'll be sure to check out your blog. ;)

Wow! What a beautiful, meaningful and powerful song. It sounds so professional - What is your setup? mic/amp, etc. - (not that you wouldn't sound great playing totally unplugged) - Thanks so much for sharing!

Thanks so much @popsoz! Pleased to know you appreciate it. • No amp – bluebird mic for vocal and guitar both plugged into to an H4N zoom, then paired with video in Adobe Premiere. I added reverb in post – definitely not my preference to do it that way, but...it was my only option to achieve a bit of ambience.

Thanks for the info - I'll have to check out Bluebird's and H4N's offerings. Your voice and guitar sound amazing - I guess this beats just recording on an iphone (although I bet you would still sound amazing:)?

You are an amazing and talented songwriter. Your voice is awesome.

Thank you @acousticsteveo!

I love your work! girl this is a great song. I am a fan this end. loved it

That truly means a lot to me coming from you @soundlegion. Excited to share more of my lil' lullabies with you.

WoW you have a perfect voice! I also looked at other studies. great to be interested in most areas of art! I appreciate you! I will enjoy to follow you!
see you again!

Grateful to know I've touched you @artizm! :)

Thank you for sharing! I loved it. I like the lyric and the expression of the song. It is sad but at the same time hopeful. We all want to find our way home and we have all we need ourselves to make it happen.
Best of luck,
Jonna

Thank you @puralife. :) Indeed – that was my message to self – you've got this, with or without company...you'll find your way home.

Wow! You did it again, make me fall in love with your voice and touched us all with your song.

Your song was open on my laptop - I opened it while I was not in the opportunity to watch a video. But I did just now, and I'm glad: WOW. I really felt your song. I've also been lost about home, and connect through that.

I'm just in time for the 7-day 'close down', so happy I could still give this an upvote.

(For some reason the upvote thingy on your post keeps hanging :-/ I've re-tried a few times! Ahhh! But I'll give you one on a next song for sure :-))

Thank you @soyrosa! I'm happy to know the lyrics spoke to you. :) apologies for being so very late in my response! tip!

Hey, your voice is awesome! So thankful to hear such voices like yours... Thank you so much

@zipporah Your voice is immaculate, I mean crazy good, I love your emotional maturity, such an excellent way to shred the pain you felt back then, sometimes we need to go through this phases, and yes they are mind shattering, but this are gifts to revert you to who you were before, and divert you from attachment, sometimes teachers want you to go through this phases here so you can truly stabilize, I'm sure you felt so much more grown afterwards

You are amazing, hit me up for collab whenever you want :)
Check Peter Broderick if you haven't yet, something in your performance made me remember him

This was a really lovely reflection @ivan.atman. I'd never heard of Peter Broderick before, but I suspect I'll be listening to a lot of him in future. I'm deeply humbled and honored by the comparison. Please forgive this embarrassingly late reply!

ganges-sunrise-3.jpg tip!

No worries on a late reply @zipporah :) I appreciate it nevertheless, glad you liked Peter Broderick, he is truly a gem, dude don't wanna be famous, but he creates amazing music, and so does his sister Heather Woods Broderick

Dear zipporah,

I've been enjoying reading your blog posts lately, as well as listening to those which feature recordings of you being musical.

It kind of hurt, though, for me to hath heard how squeaky those guitar strings were in your "Home Tonight" video! If it wasn't for how exceptionally beautiful your singing is, I probably wouldn't have been able to have watched/listened to that entire video. Not that I have much moral right to criticize, as mine own guitar playing is not yet always squeak-free.

Last week or so, and after the squeaking of mine own guitar playing happened to be very loud, and even louder than in your "Home Tonight" video, I did an online search using the keywords "how to stop guitar strings from squeaking" and learned that there are many tutorials and comments at message boards which teach about the science of how to prevent them from doing so.

From what I have read thus far, and experimented with, too, guitar strings can squeak when the fingers are slid along them, rather than placed and bounced upon them—when then I did that in regards to mine own guitar playing, I did experience for myself that when the harsh sound from squeaking strings is decreased, a warmer sound that emanates from the body of the guitar is increased.

Apparently, there are also guitar string friendly oils that can be used to prevent the strings from squeaking, and that some guitarists will wipe their fingertips onto an oily part of their face or ears before playing.

I hope you find that information to be helpful. I really do admire your talent for being musical.

From Lannie.
