Operation Human Angels, Free Store

There are places out there that are donation based thrift stores. Places like the #SalvationArmy and #GoodWill will take donations from the public and then sell those donations to low income people.

The problem with that is they can charge ridiculous prices for used items they paid nothing for. For example, the #SalvationArmy had some kitchen chairs in their window the other day. $50. No, not for the set. Each. $200 for four used kitchen chairs.

But then, on special days like today, you find things like this.

This is the second one I've found since coming to #Duluth in September, the first being the Domiano, which specializes in helping the homeless community.

This ensures that your donations are going into the homes of the poor, instead of the pockets of a CEO. #peopleoverprofit

So please, if you have some extra stuff laying around, do a quick Google Search. Find the mission in your city, I bet you have at least one, probably more that you've never even noticed.

Give those used items to those who will put it to the greatest use.

Love to you!

I love this. I was just reading an article about Really Really Free Markets and I want to do one in Denver. As it is I try and give things away, on Freecycle, NextDoor, Facebook, etc., Little Free Libraries, friends, the neighbor who collects clothing for free clothing banks, and whatever else I can think of. Thrift shops are my utter last resort. And if I had to use one, I wouldn't use Goodwill or Salvation Army: Goodwill pays their disabled employees slave wages, some are earning 25¢ yes cents an hour, because they consider them working to be "therapeutic" ...really, being slave labor is therapeutic because you're blind or in a wheelchair??! ...and Salvation Army is rabidly anti-gay. I'd give to the Arc or DAV if I had to. But yeah - they charge absurd prices because rich people shop there too who "love a bargain" or because it's trendy or eco friendly. But then poor people who have no other options are left with nothing. Grr. I once said that in an eco group, and got attacked, people getting mad and asking me if rich people should be buying wasteful new stuff?? ...I was like, rich people should be shopping less and giving more OOPS DID I SAY THAT OUT LOUD

Jesus fuck. I had no idea Goodwill did that to people, that's insane. Absolutely fucking insane.

More people should say that out loud! Did they give you the boot or were you graciously allowed to stay?

I was graciously allowed to stay. But there are a lot of folks in those groups who think they can shop their way to saving the environment, and I'm just...

People are... Something else. Lol!

Have you heard anything about the mountains of used clothes the US sends to African countries? Mostly stuff that doesn't sell at places like Goodwill or the Salvation Army?

I mean, come on that's gotta be some kind of mental illness. To have SO MUCH that other countries are saying they don't want it anymore because our overstock is killing their local economy...

I love Jackie Chan, BTW, LOL!

Our society is very sick indeed.

“And the church said - AMEN!!!” 😉
Very good post! I had to stop giving to the Salvation Army for this very reason #peopleoverprofits

That's nice
