Computer Knowledge: University versus Real Life

I feel like academia is the why to everything, but then you have to learn the how on your own. Whether it is through internships or entry level jobs. I find that to be ridiculous considering the cost of tuition. At these prices, they really ought to teach both the how and the why.

Many times you don't even need to know the why as long as you know how. Yes, I know it is best to know both, but sometimes people do not have the personality, funding, or time.

It would be wonderful if most schools could restructure their programs. Undergraduate should teach how to stuff for your field with the minimum why behind stuff. Then if you want to full understand the why to improve your how, then you can do a master's program. Finally, the PhD can just stay the same: doing cutting edge research for pushing the field.

If this is how university is supposed to be, then schools are failing left and right.
