Oracle of Jeremiah: My people have committed two evils, they have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and they have dug cisterns for themselves. Jeremiah 2:13

The Book of Jeremiah relates that God spoke to the prophet during the times of the kings Josiah, Jehoiakim, and Zedekiah to turn the inhabitants of the Kingdom of Judah from their sins, and thus avoid the destruction that was coming from the north, from the Babylonian empire that was destroying everything in its path.
And in one of his oracles the prophet identified God with the true source of living water, something that has great significance for the Christian faith, because Lord Jesus in the Gospel of John when he met a Samaritan woman, also used the same term to refer to himself. Just as the human body needs water to live, man needs that wisdom from above that, like living water, nourishes the soul of men; as the prophet taught with his oracles, men without this living water can only find destruction, as Judah found when it was devastated by Babylon. Just as water sustains life in desert lands, so wisdom orders the world and sustains the social life of men. Water and wisdom are similar in the sense that both have life as their main goal.
This is why Isaiah taught the word of God to convert Israel from its way: "My people have committed two evils, they have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and they have dug cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that cannot hold water. Jeremiah 2:13.
Only God should be feared, Jeremiah taught, and men should not put all their trust in material goods, as happened with the inhabitants of Judah who trusted in the water they accumulated in their cisterns.
This is why the prophet continued with the reflection and concluded his oracle with great wisdom:
"´Your wickedness will punish you;
your backsliding will rebuke you.
Consider then and realize
how evil and bitter it is for you
when you forsake the LORD your God
and have no awe of me,´
declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty" Jeremiah 2:19.
