2064: A MODERN VERSION OF ORWELL'S 1984

in orwell •  8 years ago

I am sitting here with a copy of 1984 and reading these Party slogans from 1984, page 4:

1: WAR IS PEACE
2: FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
3: IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

I read this and put myself in George Orwell's place. What would I write if I had to tell a story about a time 40+ years in the future?

2064

I want to lead off with slogan's that human's around the world use to guide themselves. These would be statements that force people to think beyond politics and to focus on solving problems the marginalized population faces. These statements would also need to get people to think about their current world and the world they are leaving to future adults and earth (or earth-like planet) habitants.

1: BALANCE WITH NATURE
2: VALUE EVERY MOMENT
3: FOCUS ON THE FUTURE

I also wrote out 7 aspects that will change how people live in 2064. This list should make things that are difficult or impossible now laughably simple in the future.

I chose 2064 since 1984 was written in the 1940s or 40 years in the future. Forty years from 1984 is 2024. When 2024 arrives, writing about 40 years into the future would be the same as writing about 2064.

PREFACE

For these concepts, there has to be a central and secure computer. It may look like one computer that runs locally, or computational or ai resources that exist on a cloud server in a encrypted space. The home computer will be referred to as HC.

GENE THERAPY

Overview:

A machine connected to an HC that allows for gene modification, gene therapy, and gene analysis.

Example:

I imagined myself walking up to a machine near my sink that was wirelessly connected to my HC. I stick my finger in a slot and it pricks a small amount of blood.

From here the HC analyzes my gene therapy treatment and compares my genes/dna to a large database of dna data from people of my ethnicity.

The HC finishes it's analysis and offers me a trade off. It could be extra life for decreased mobility or the ability to read minds for a lowered life expectancy.

MATERIAL

Overview:

Dictate the specifications of a physical object and the HC uses a resin 3d printer called Material to make any object smaller than a 27 cubic feet within an hour.

Example:

My family has been able to stop buying Christmas presents and rely on the Material for gifts, tools, toys, house repair, and crafts.

My daughter had an aviation project for Life School and was able to design 10 prototypes and calculate flight distance for each design.

LIFE SCHOOL

Overview:

The HC analyzes your child's abilities and strengths and compares them to the top 10% most happy and successful individuals. A custom life plan, with a 3 to 20 year timeline, is made that comes with a weekly learning module.

Example:

I have a report due that HC will use to give me a grade for my community development unit. I have to ask 10 neighbors what skills they've learned 20 years ago that are still valuable today.

CONNECT

Overview:

As part of Life School, people older than 16 can have dinners planned with folks that can help maximize financial success or help an individual be happy. This AI finds allies and life plan intersections with a priority of local connections first. A person can prioritize international connections if they live in a rural area.

Example:

Last night HC organized a blind Potluck where I met a few long term friend matches and project based matches. I am trying to save for a vacation to Europe and the short term matches have goals that will help me finish a Life School module so kids can research the costs of citizenship in 7 different countries.

XPORT

Overview:

A vehicle can be summoned for a small monthly fee to take people around the country.

For a larger fee a small aircraft can transport to various locations.

Example:

I have 6 months income saved up and HC has determined I can afford 2 more months of travel if I use XPORT's solar powered aircraft and teach an English unit.

I will be paid to teach English remotely from France, which gives me some money for savings when I am done my trip.

BIO.ME

Overview:

A wearable device that attaches on the arm. It is like a portable HC but provides fitness, weather, spectrometer data to aid travelers who use the device.

Example:

I have run every morning during winter and bio.me determined i can continue running if I run faster or work out 10 states south of where I live.

How will you make it scary? The point in 1984 is to speak about the concerns you envision now. By the way you can add quantum computer, drones/robot and artificial intelligence.

Utopia instead of dystopia. How about something in between?

I have seen this question before.

The long and short is that even utopias have a dark side. Because any tech advancement can be used for selfish gains.

So would you say that tech is neutral and it is human nature that causes good and evil?

I take that back. I think the tech would need to be aware of its own programming and choose to execute malicious or good code or tech. From the tech's perspective it is just shifting electrons.

I think tech can be good, neutral, or evil.
