Today was a public holiday in Norway, so we spent the day at the sea, locally in the Bærum area just outside Oslo. Had some visitors with us, went to the nearest island (where I did a litterwalk the other day) and did some grilling, let the kids run a bit around, and some of us did some swimming too.
"My" bay, where I'm quite often alone in the weekdays, are filled up with other boats during the weekends and holidays, and today was no exception.
Two things happened this day - there was another boat, a relatively small open boat, that eventually managed to yell and get my attention - they had electric starter on their engine, but their battery was flat after driving a mini fridge for some hours. I screwed out my starter battery, threw it into the dhingy and took it over, hoping that they wouldn't need any more tools or cables. They were chuckling a bit, because they had actually called for the rescue service, so we were a bit in a hurry if we were to start the engine before the rescue service would arrive. And, he managed to unscrew the positive pole from his battery, but not the negative, and then the rescue service was coming, so I just had to take my battery back again. Here is the small boat and the rescue service:
At the end of the day my friend was standing by the rudder, he seemed to enjoy it and it seemed like he got the hang of it relatively quickly. But alas ... when arriving to the harbour, there was this area that was very shallow, and even marked so on the map, but he didn't notice. Luckily it wasn't solid rock so we didn't crash - but we got stuck, pretty much stuck, actually I have never before got so stuck with this boat that I couldn't get out by putting the engine in reverse and wriggling with the bow propellor (except for when we accidentally crashed hard with a Swedish island ... well, that's another story). Another boat came by and asked if we needed any help, so he tried pulling me backwards, without success. Eventually I gave him a rope from the top of the mast and asked him to drag me sideways, we were really quite stuck, we were keeling like 30 degrees to the port before we eventually we got loose. Unfortunately the boat was not quite ready for sailing, I sent my wife down to clean the tables before the operation, she did a good job but there were still quite some things that fell over, quite some mess to clean up after this operation.
My plan was to use the stern anchor and tie the bow of the ship to the land, but one of the ladies joining us is a bit handicapped so it would be quite impossible for her to get down from the bow and to land. We did manage to get her in and out of the dhingy though. I'm quite sure she appreciated. We did a bonfire, and we made "stick bread" (curling bread dough around a stick and baked it on the fire)
Unfortunately I didn't take much photos today, I'm using my cellphone and it's not water tight, so I left it behind while swimming.
This got a bit fuzzy, but it's the ice cream sales boat visiting our bay.
I found this in the harbour where we picked up and dropped off passengers, this relatively small boat seems to be perfectly sheltered under this relatively big catamaran!

Wait. What? There's an ice cream boat? Why haven't I ever heard of an ice cream boat? Maybe, because I don't live in Norway, or very rarely go out on a lake or the open sea? I feel like someone should have told me about such a boat by now. Maybe they were keeping it for themselves? :)
Sounds like a great time, sans the grounding. I hope your friend didn't get too down on himself. I also hope he helped to clean up the mess down below. Seems only fair. :)
That's cool. The catamaran acts as boat storage when it's in dry dock. I hope those crates are pretty strong.

I hate the ice cream car, but I do buy from the boat every now and then.

Artig! 😄

It's always good to lend a helping hand. Often we say "well the rescue boat is coming" or "someone else will come". We never know when someone is really in need.
We also make stick bread here in South Africa. Sounds like a fun weekend you had :)

In Norway quite many of the boaters pay for a "full membership" in the rescue organization. It's a democratic organization, so ordinary membership rights are included - but most of the boaters are in just because it's a pretty good insurance. Even such silliness as getting out of fuel or battery, and one can get free help (or course, they will prioritize real emergencies if needed). I'm quite clumsy, so I have utilized this offer quite many times myself. It's the last resort, I usually try managing without this service, I find it a bit embarrassing to be a regular client :-)

Hahaha :) a regular client to emergency services . At least your heart is good. Reminds me of my mom 😂 Sounds like a whole community vibe. I know a man who was born in Norway, lives in America now. He is literally one of the nicest prople I know.

Simple, cheap, yet delicious :-)
A quick google search and I found this: https://www.tastemade.com/videos/campfire-bread-on-a-stick
We use much thinner sticks, we use yeast rather than baking powder, and we eat the bread as it is, without any fancy topping. Of course, when the kids make it it will often be burnt on the outside and doughy inside - best to supervise a bit, and also to put as thin layer of dough as possible around the stick to make sure it will be ready before the kids get too impatient.

There are quite many people bathing now already, but they're usually not in the water for long.
I'm a real chicken when it comes to going into cold water, so I'm cheating ... wet-suit for the rescue! To my defence, I'm in the water to swim a bit, not to prove that I'm brave enough to jump into cold water.
One of my friend with his 6yrs old son joined, he's working in swimming pools, being a life guard, doing swimming courses and things like that, and of course his son is also a very good swimmer. They came in half-length wet-suits. His son eventually got enough, water was too cold for only swimming in a half-suit.

Wow, this is really nasty and at the same time awesome because it really teaches some things, sometimes we learn from adversity, I can absolutely say that because this experience of your night sound like a challenges but at the same time it does teach some lesson, life is always about lesson, we learn day by day. It is really good sharing such an inspiring sailing experience. Keep the good work flowing, I will look forward to read more of your piece this days, never being to Norway but I could see some part of it through your work.

En ekte eventyr du hadde.
Takk for at du deler.
