The "Bærum bassin" is a part of the Oslo fjord with quite many islands. Since the area is quite protected by the outermost islands, there is not so much circulation of the water masses there. The inner Oslo Fjord is rarely completely frozen, but the Bærum bassin freezes up completely almost every winter, to the extent that it's safe to walk on the ice during the winter time, they even make skiing tracks over the sea. This is of course also the last area to thaw up, it is often still icy in the middle of March or (like this year) even late April. I remember I was once very much surprised, enjoying a hot spring weekend day on my boat, "sea ice" wasn't on my mind at all, but when I tried to enter the Bærum bassin, it was full stop. What's moving so fast over there? Fetching my binocular, I discovered a human doing ice skating ...
The photos below was taken last Monday (almost a week ago), from Bærum - I didn't have time to check, but I'm pretty sure that Tuesday it was no ice anymore.
I had the Monday off due to night duties, and I needed to go from Sandvika to Bestumkilen to deliver the dhingy to a service. The gear wire had become broken (luckily it's a RIB and not a hard boat - I was going to pick up @movingman and approached with a bit too big speed, so I tried putting the gear in reverse to break the speed ... instead of breaking, I got more speed. My jerk-knee-reaction was of course to try to "break" even more, causing the dhingy to speed up even more. We were really close to the service, I should have delivered the dhingy while being there, bad planning from my side ... ).
Here is Lille Ostsund, when I went out from Sandvika it was still a belt of ice stretching across the whole straight. (And it seemed to be even more ice towards the next straight, Snarøysund)
The ice was wet, soft and thin, so I sliced through very easily
Right at the outside of the Bærum bassin there was also small pieces of ice floating in the sea.
And a military minesweeper doing some practicing (they were putting some RIBs to the water when I was passing, on my return trip there was one RIB with people in military uniforms a bit on the distance from the mother ship, I have no idea what they were up to).
Now, the return trip, three hours has passed since the first photo - now there are only fragments of ice left in Store Ostsund. That's rather amazing! Me passing through it making an opening may have been a catalyzing it into dissolving into small fragments.
View towards Torvøya, Snarøya, Fornebu ... only some few pixels big on the scaled-down photo, but there is another sail boat on the photo, it was choosing the Snarøysund passage, probably still some ice left there, because he apparently used much more time than me.
It's not much visible on those photos, but there is actually quite much ice in the distance on both those two photos.

Broken gear wires do happen on bigger boats as well, often with much worse consequences. I have maybe 13 tons of mass that I sometimes need to navigate in tight harbors with lots of very expensive boats around. The collateral damage may be great if the gear wire breaks. According to the laws of the sea, I'm not economically responsible for such collateral damages, meaning my insurance company wouldn't cover anything.
I've had some failures, like entering a Swedish harbour with my previous boat ("only" 1.5 tons, but still ...) in gale when the engine stopped working, running out of diesel in a narrow straight when going against the wind (also my previous boat), break-down on the junction connecting the engine to the propeller shaft just when navigating in the harbour, etc. In the aftermath it's always a nice story and good experience when things do go right (and in all the cases above, it did).
It can be really difficult to navigate in such circumstances even when there aren't technical problems. I have been loosing control several times just to recover with millimeters in margins.
When things go right, but with razor-sharp margins, everyone is happy and may even laud the captain's skills. When things go wrong the same people will be really upset.

Broken break wires on the bike, as well as frozen breaking wires, or going downhill on summer tires on ice ... yeah, I do have quite some horror stories on that as well. In Tromsø we had a steep downhill to get either downtown or to the school, today in Oslo we have a steep downhill to get home from school or the transport, it's amazing I haven't had any real bad accident.
My last accident was here in Oslo, I always used both breaks down the downhill, and I didn't notice until it was too late that the breaks had become too worn out, so one day the bike was just accelerating down the hill despite me breaking as hard as I could. I couldn't make the turn and was flying right into our local forest, my son laughing hard of me.

Yes, we are frequently sleeping in the boat, but since I have a family and children going to schools/kinder garden, I live in a house. I would probably have moved to the boat if it wasn't for the children.

So it was you who broke the ice, not spring. Now that the waters are clear and the sun will burn stronger with every month hope to see some more pictures from your sailing days.
Btw...did you used your autopilot system to sail through the ice or just sailor skills?

I think it was on autopilot. I can't take much pictures while standing by the rudder :-)

Some bot will emerge these years to do that too :-)

I started sailing just when smart phones started getting popular, and of course my first boat didn't have any navigation systems at all, just a very simple autopilot able to do only one task - keep the course steady according to the compass heading. I'm quite happy to actually have experienced navigating with paper maps, compass and the signals from light houses. I believe that kind of knowledge will slowly go extinct.

Amazing experience @tobixen... I also loved the sea.specially in spring season... I liked the sharp salty smell of the air, and the vastness of the horizons bounded only by a vault of azure sky above. It made her feel small, but free as well....
