78 year ago, on 20 June 1942, four Auschwitz prisoners, led by Kazimierz Piechowski, stole a Steyr 220 staff car and SS-Totenkopfverbände uniforms and brazenly escaped by driving out through the front “Arbeit Macht Frei” gates of Auschwitz.
After World War Two, Piechowski was again imprisoned, this time by the Communist government.
