The third installment of my trip to the Maryhill Museum of Art: Stonehenge

The last few days I have been talking a bit about the Maryhill Museum of Art and today I'm going to finish that off by looking at the man that built the building along with some other well know Pacific Northwest structures.

This from Wikipedia :

Samuel Hill (13 May 1857 – 26 February 1931), usually known as Sam Hill, was an American businessman, lawyer, railroad executive, and advocate of good roads. He substantially influenced the Pacific Northwest region's economic development in the early 20th century.

His projects include the Peace Arch, a monument to 100 years of peace between the United States and Canada, on the border between Blaine, Washington, and Surrey, British Columbia, and the Maryhill Museum of Art. Although his promotion of paved modern roads is possibly his greatest legacy, he is now best remembered for building the Stonehenge replica in Maryhill, Washington.

Here is a bit more from the museum about Sam Hill.

And the sign at the Stonehenge memorial

Here is a cool schematic from the same sign

This place is as cool as it seems!

If you look back at the first picture in this post I am standing about 20 yards away and that is an 8 year old standing only a floot or two from the wall.

The second picture is looking south as you enter. It is just a large dirt lot and you can drive right up to the structure! No markings or pilons or fences, I love it!

Anyone is free to wander all around the Stonehenge replica and the grounds surrounding it. No fee or tour guides or time limit, just freedom to look at your leisure. Wonderful!

And if you think you've seen it all well, I got one more for you. In the following picture I am sitting on a rock looking southwest down the Columbia and Stonehenge is about 30 yards up a hill behind me.

The gray rectangular structure just down the path is a memorial to Samuel Hill.

Hope you enjoyed taking this field trip with me.

I did not know that there was a Stonehenge in US. Thanks for showing.

Yeah, it's awesome if you ever find yourself in the Pacific Northwest.
