HOW TO CALCULATE THE VOLUME OF A KRAFT BOX

in packaging •  5 years ago

Today we explain how to calculate the volume of a kraft box, a relevant issue and
that many people do not know. Why is volume in packaging important? If you
dedicate yourself to eCommerce, you are already more than familiar with the
concept of volumetric weight. weight is charged to us by the
transport or courier company for the transport of the package, regardless of
whether it is completely full or only partially.

Knowing how to calculate the volume of our boxes will be, above all, something very
useful when making a forecast of our logistics costs. But it will also help us
to know if the boxes we are using are suitable for our products or if they need
additional interior protection or padding. Without further delay, let's get to
the point!

What Is The Volume Of A Box And How Is It Measured?

The volume of a box is the space it is capable of containing. To carry out its
measurement, it is necessary to determine the following three metrics:

H (Height): The vertical dimension of the box is understood as high.

L (Length): Of the remaining two dimensions, the longest is the length of the
box.

B (Width): Of the two remaining dimensions, the shortest is the width of the box.

Once we have calculated these three measures, we proceed to perform the following
mathematical account:

LENGTH X WIDTH X HEIGHT

The result of this calculation gives us the volume of a box. But there is another
factor to consider: not all types of corrugated kraft boxes are the same and, as we
have seen on other occasions, the thickness of the kraft can be very variable
depending on the wavelength and the quality of the papers. This has
consequences when calculating the volume of a box, since if the kraft is very
thick, the outer measurements of that box will not be the same as its internal measurements.

What is each of these measures for? The external measures are used to calculate the
shipping cost (courier companies calculate the external volume, which is the
most bulky; they also do not have access to the inside of the boxes) and also
to know the storage volume of that box if You have it mounted. The interior
measurements, meanwhile, allow you to know the useful interior space of that
box.

Volume Calculation In Cm3 And Liters

As we have said, the volume of a box is the result of multiplying its height,
length and width. However, it should be noted that to obtain the result in
cubic centimeters, which is the most used measure when calculating volumes,
these three parameters in centimeters must be measured.

Let's see a practical example with the real measurements of one of our boxes,
specifically the kraft box with flaps made of corrugated kraft of a wave with
measures of 60 cm long, and 40 cm wide and high:

60 x 40 x 40 = 96,000 cm3

Second, it should be noted that another widely used measure, in addition to cubic
centimeters, is liters . To calculate the volume in liters it is necessary to
do the same calculation and divide the result by 1,000,000 or 1,000 if the
parameters have been measured in millimeters or centimeters respectively, or it
will be multiplied by 1,000 if they were measured in meters.

Next we will calculate the volume in liters of the box in the previous example:

Measures in mm: 600 x 400 x 400 = 96,000,000 / 1,000,000 = 96L

Measures in cm: 60 x 40 x 40 = 96,000 / 1,000 = 96L

Measurements in meters: 0.6 x 0.4 x 0.4 = 0.096 x 1,000 = 96L

Conclusion

Once you have clear the volume of your box, we recommend you do not adjust  the product too much inside the box. Ideally, leave at least one centimeter for fingers to enter and the product can be easily removed. We hope that you now have clearer how to calculate the volume
of a box and take advantage of this data to optimize your logistics costs.
