In my personal opinion : NO.
But in Indian Context : YES.
Allow me to elaborate.
Here is one film from Hollywood.
BRAVEHEART.
This film was claimed to be based upon the famous and very respected historical figure - William Wallace.
Mel Gibson not only directed and produced this movie, he also played protagonist character of Wallace.
Released in 1995, BRAVEHEART was a critical and commercial success (IMDB - 8.6). It won total 5 oscars including,
Best Movie
Best direction
Best Cinematography
Everything seems good. Right?
No!
This movie tops the list of most inaccurate movies ever made on any historical figure. Let me repeat. MOST INACCURATE MOVIE EVER MADE!
And it still won accolades.
So the difference is clear. In Hollywood, a movie is a movie. It is not a phenomenon. It does not bear responsibility of separating facts from fiction.
Thus movies like Braveheart can be produced, released and can be given Oscars too.
Now,
Welcome to India.
Here, it is different!
In India, people have foolishly idolized Bollywood. They flock into Bhai movies faster than sheep. They actually think Bhai can do those badass action sequences on his own.
They think if Aamir Khan says something, then it must be true. It doesn't matter if the movies 3 Idiots and Dangal were ideologically opposite of each other.
They say Akshay Kumar is patriotic just because they saw him doing patriotic stuff in movies. And they forget that he switched his nationality to probably save some tax.
And the list goes on!
Hence, it is completely natural for Karni Sena to start a nationwide movement (which they never did for any social evils before).
Because for them and many Indians, it is correct to oppose Padmavati.
Because movies matter to us. More than illiteracy, poverty and corruption.
As Ramadhir Singh himself once said,
“Jab tak is desh mein cinima hai, log chutiya bante rahenge.”
(As long as, movies are being made in India, people will continue to remain fools)!
