I had a doctor use the phrase "quality of life" in his consideration of whether or not to prescribe a certain pain medication for me before my major surgery. Tramadol. The latest rage in the medical community as a "safe" alternative to opiates.
Opiates are dangerous because they're like heroin. They make you feel very good. But they work. Tramadol doesn't. It was nice of him to consider the pain I was enduring. Made me feel like knee capping him as a little bit better demonstration than the f**king cane I needed to get to his office:) I don't blame him though. All of this hysteria over prescription opiates is from Sessions.
Regarding medication of this type for people in my age group, though, I am totally libertarian. If we managed to safeguard our internal bodily mechanisms to the extent that we made it this far I think we an can be trusted to decide what to take and not to take for the last years of our life to make it tolerable. I'd use whiskey but that stuff affects my balance and speech patterns.
