I paint plastic toy soldiers! #4

in painting •  7 years ago

Any fans of Starcraft ? Because this next commission was fully inspired by it!

I had a request to paint a Warhammer 40k Eldar army to look like a  Protoss army from Starcraft and it was so much fun doing it. It was awhile ago so when I look back to it I am not entirely satisfied with the job but back then I was charging a fairly small fee for these commissions so it looks quite alright for the price. I've been posting mostly about painting fantasy miniature so today it will be a bit more on the sci fi end of the hobby.

Eldars are something like the elves of the sci fi universe of Warhammer 40k. They have their cruel Dark Eldar brothers as a separate fraction just like the elves in the fantasy. The world of 40k is a bit darker though and there aren't really any good guys.

So lets get to the miniatures shall we?

First off one of the HQ's (generals) - an Eldar Farseer. I tried to keep the yellow/blue colours as they are in the game as much as possible.. so much that It was a bit too much yellow in the end.

These are called Eldar Guardians and are the basic troops of the Eldars.

These are the Fire Dragons and they are one of the most elite troops of the Eldar army.

This is just a Guardians Lieutenant but the guy wanted him to look a bit different and more special so he is blue instead of yellow.

Swooping Hawks - flying light armoured troops .

Finally probably their strongest unit - The Wraithknight. It is a massive robot with multiple weapon choices as you can see I magnetised the arms so he has all the options available.

I did quite a few more vehicles, space ships and so on for this army but I couldn't find the photos of them. This was a pretty big project with about 100 models quite a few of them fairly big. And the client wanted almost everything magnetised so he can switch weapons or carry the bigger models easier. That made this take twice the amount of time since I had to spend quite a lot of time drilling the models to place the magnets in and then paint extra 6-8 weapons for the bigger models. Another thing that was going to make my life a lot easier was if I had an airbrush back then. Painting these big models with brushes takes so much more time and the blends are never as good on a huge surface like that. So all in all it took about a month to finish it all. Client was really satisfied so it all worked well.
