For some who has been away from STEEM for the last 3 months, there has been a lot of changes which you may not be aware of. Most would be so confuse that they do not know where to start.
So here is a quick breakdown as to what have been happening if you have not caught up yet.
Most importantly, you need to know that @aggroed and his team has created a tool called http://steem-engine.com which enables or simulates smartcontracts on the STEEM blockchain. In simple terms, it gives others an opportunity to create their own token using the same design as STEEM which post, vote and earn. And the best is that everything still runs off the STEEM blockchain
So here are the current 4 sites which has deployed their own token and is currently live with steemians using their same login to use these apps.

With thousands of users already in the community of PAL ( Peace Abundance & Love ) where it was a easy transition for them to just go in.

Steemcoinpan was started by a Korean community member which then quickly got picked up by other communities as they managed to maintain a high token value by introducing burn tokens and staking incentives.

This is one of my favourites so far as it is very focus on SPORTS content and even though there is a huge amount of distributed tokens pushing the token value down however with a moderated site for just SPORTS, I have a good feeling that this will just grow at a steady rate

One of the first projects launched thru STEEM Engine, like the title goes, its meant for Weed enthusiast who like to create content based on the subject matter. Do check it out if you are into it.
Whats Next ?
With STEEM announcing that SMT would be launch very soon, I do believe that these projects would transition to SMT upon launch. The only challenge for these projects is to work out a way to maintain the Token value else it would just turn into another useless token sitting in your wallet.
All the listed projects above has support for the Chrome plugin to login using your STEEM account with Keychain. So to ease your login process do download and install Keychain.

Indeed within past 3 months some serious development was happening within STEEM blockchain. Steem Engine opened new opportunities for many, however I've read some concerns that SMT may be a threat for tokens created already on Steem Engine.
Time will show.
How do they burn tokens? From my observation STEEMit only burn tokens if we pay to have our post in "promoted" section.
ps. I wonder if all those tokens launched via STEEM engline do have similar json format (as far as I know, those are all records consising on simple text). Any idea?

I think steemengine and smts will both survive. Usage will depend on simplicity. @aggroed has shown dedication towards steem and I think he will be doing great. I wouldnt very much put my trust in steemit Inc about SMTs launch. It seems it will still take a while to launch
