Very much in line with the last post I wrote, the straw men are out and about and they are getting pounded into oblivion. All of the sudden the righteous voices are yelling to the winds that the problem has always been life choices and their podiums never looked so shiny.
Erhh that's not it
I will grant you this much: The idea of forgiving someone's debt, at least the idea alone, does little to nothing to solve the bigger problem here. Which is to say that the policy that is being sold to win votes is a non-starter to begin with, and it's literally being spouted just to play political football.
But, and this is the key but, we can't say there's absolutely nothing wrong with our education system, because that is simply a ridiculous statement as well. I know what you might be thinking - But... they made a choice - Yes, that's true, but it also matters what is on the menu.
You see, today we have a cartel, because that is what it is, that is protected by our laws, because they own politicians, and they are nothing more than predatory lenders who take advantage of vulnerable minds that are trying to live up to expectations.
Please elaborate
It's expected of a young mind to go to college, to seek their future with hunger, to get a degree, to get a good job and to live the american dream. We sell the idea not only verbally but also through media, since the college life and successful entrepreneur is a common theme in our movies.
So, when kids graduate high school they are going to shoot for the stars, as they should, mind you. Now, if you add this to the fact that we have an industry that is there to convince these kids they ought to take out loans to pay for overpriced careers, and then you add the legal protections that these "loan sharks" have to guarantee their payday, you end up in the mess we are in.
We have thousands of students graduating universities that owe so much, they would have to immediately land one of those dream jobs that come with lambos on the side to be able to ever pay them. But, the problem is that the jobs don't actually exist.
So, these kids are sold the promise of riches, they are told it's their duty to become someone, to go to college, and then they leave college to go work a starting position somewhere making a little over a Joe Blow who went straight into the workforce.
No way out
To add insult to injury, there is no way to get out of these debts, none. Actually, there is only one, if you die, that's it. If a student stops paying, but work, the wages will be garnished, and as you might imagine, the amount taken from the paychecks will grow as the now regretful student makes more money.
So, if you are tempted to talk about personal choice which at face value I agree with, please take into account the other variables at play, and yes, get off the high horse.

The opinion you expressed in this article is one of the main reasons I hate baby boomers.
They sit up there on their high horses judging today's youth; as if, under similar circumstances, they would do better. There is almost nothing that a young person today can't figure out due to living in the age of information. That is both a blessing and a curse. Not trying to say young people are perfect. This access to all of the worlds information has made people quite arrogant and lazy. No one puts in time to learn stuff when it could just be googled'. Why would you?
Information is NOT knowledge. Doublespeak is real and language is being manipulated to make people fall in compliance. Don't believe me? Try expressing an unpopular opinion openly.
I like your work Meno. Keep it up buddy.

I used to tutor high school kids. And I'd tell them, don't go into debt for college. I have no idea how many listened to me, but I like to think at least one.
The thing of it is, there are points on both sides.
It is absolutely unfair to 17 and 18-year olds that the cartel system along with government subsidies have jacked up college prices to ridiculous levels.
It is also true that nobody is being forced to take out these loans. Unless you call 13 years of brainwashing with immorally appropriated funds that this is the only way to get to the "American Dream" force. Well, that might be a point there...

Oh yeah the system is totally busted anymore.
You go to school for 1/3 of your life, get yourself into so much debt that you owe till your about 30 -35 then that is when you can finally start to save up towards retirement. Without pension and with so few people actually investing into 401ks and social security most likely non existence by the time we retire there is not all to much hope unless you seriously take responsibility of your finances.
Stupid high interest rates etc. I think it is also important for people to realize that they should NEVER pay a minimum. Always try to pay a little extra and put it towards the principle in any case you can. It will make a huge impact.

We don’t need to teach young people the need to develop a savings habit.
It’s much more important to teach them an investing habit these days!

Yeah, this topic is the fucking worst! It boils my noodle. If the gov’t didn’t subsidize education, then there wouldn’t be so much tuition inflation. The amount of admins per student is just absolutely insane. And to top it all off, when I tell non-Americans that my average interest rate for grad school loans is 7.3%, they just go speechless and mouth the words, “What? Why?”

That you can't discharge student debt in a bankruptcy is a major concern. What a silly law.

middle class will disappear, and it will be two classes again. Unfortunately war will happen and the rebuilding/jobs will re-appear.

I think in the States it's pretty clear cut that it's not worth going to college unless you're doing a technical degree that's directly linked to a high starting salary.
In the UK where the loans system is a bit less ferocious it's still very much the most accessible path to a higher wage - 50% on average more per annum after 10 years.
I give it another 10 yrs until it's not worth it!
Apprenticeships are a better option for most I think.
