So how do you suggest a newcomer finds new content without looking at the trending page? Where else should they look if they do not already have a feed? They have to start somewhere.

When I first came here I found people off clicking on the tags list, that will bring you to what's trending in those area's. If you have a particular area of interest click on tag then go down and find whatever interest you, click on it and it will bring you to what's trending in those areas.
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

Stop on boarding them to Steemit. Hit the other frontends like SteemPeak, etc.

That is the dilemma. Trending needs cleaning up, but few seem willing to do it. Maybe hf21 will help. Palnet is a little better as the boys have less influence. Those who have time could direct new users to good accounts that match their interests.
