Gone for a few days - got home for a small harvest in the dark.

A few days away – and a late night harvest

I was away from the house for 3 days – and picked what I could prior to leaving. I returned last night – and decided to go out and see what if anything grew while I was gone.

My first mistake was waiting a bit before going out. The sun set, and it was getting dark – this was prime time for the blood sucking birds – aka mosquito’s were out in full force. They were buzzing my ears like Maverick in the original Top Gun, and were finding full meals on my legs, arms and back. I most likely missed quite a bit - while swatting them away one handed, while holding a cell phone in the other to shine some light.

The harvest

  • I pulled some great looking tomatoes – Can’t wait to eat some for dinner tonight
  • Sugar snap peas – been waiting for a harvest like this for a while. This was one of the few things she really wanted this year. Unfortunately for her – she is out of town this week. That leaves more for me!!!!
  • Green Beans – I love green beans – the just keep producing. Day in and day out I seem to find another dozen or so ready to eat. I love the production. If I knew how to can, I might plant more to give it a shot.

Garden Updates

Too dark for photos last night – my mistake!

  • Kale: cut back all my kale middle of last week and dried it. Most of the leaves were getting hit hard by mites, or slugs, or something that likes to put holes into it. Good news is, all the Kale plants have new growth that will be ready to harvest in a few more days

  • Lettuce: Mixed results, but the heat isn’t great for it. Half of stuff I cut back, just died, and all the rest has so many holes in the leaves. I will need to get some help to figure out what is going after them, and find a way to help discourage it.

  • Pepper Plants: No peppers growing, but the plants seem to have doubled in size. I guess they are finally a little happier.

  • Carrots: Are growing strong – and are probably past the point of when I need to thin them, might just let them go nuts for fun.

  • Potatoes: These were a late late add – and seem to be doing well. I hope they give some production this year.

  • Herbs: My Lemon Balm, Peppermint and Spearmint do not seem to like the current weather/location anymore. I think it more than just being a little dry for a few days. They are not growing much new growth, and the lemon balm is getting what I will say are “rusty” leaves.

That's it - I will go back and get some new photos in the day light this week!!!
