She drove as fast as she could without running red lights. Her slim fingers gripped the steering wheel with white knuckle intensity. Her heart raced and she cursed the upcoming red light. Her thoughts raced What happened? Why did it have to be Samuel?
He tires squealed as she executed a turn taken too fast. Slow down, Gabrielle. You're no good to him dead!
Pulling into the Emergency Room parking she parked as close to the door as she could and fumbled with her keys and purse to get out of the car. Slamming the door of the car she almost forgetting to push the key fob with its secure beep to lock it.
What does it matter if Samuel is lying there hurt or dying? She struggled to compose herself as she passed through the sliding doors and walked to the security desk. Identifying herself, she was shown to a room. Unprepared for what faced her, she blanched at the sight of her strong husband lying inert on the crisp, white sheets. His eyes were swollen and a jagged gash peeked through gauze where blood stained the surface.
A steady electronic beep echoed in the otherwise quiet room. His pale gowned figure threw her heart in fresh panic. God, where were you when he was in danger?
Her hands groped for his fingers entwined with an IV tube fed from a see through bag. His fingers lay limp, but warm in her hand. She squeezed it looking for an answer, but all she heard was the slow beep of the monitor that tracked his heart rate on the screen.
A nurse entered and approached her, "I know this must be a shock, Mrs. Machenzie, but your husband is stable. He's on something for pain and to sedate him."
Tears spilled down Tess' face and she could contain her emotions no longer. She backed out of the room and strode to the lobby, looking for a rest room. Please, oh please, God, heal Samuel!
The nurse was waiting outside the room when she returned.
"Dr. Richard is one of our best and he is overseeing Samuel's care. The internal injuries sustained are being closely monitored. Its fortunate he was brought in so quickly. Let us know if there's anything you need."
Tess' phone rang and she ignored it. She sat down before her legs could betray her and closed her eyes. Her world was spinning out of control and her rock lay at the mercy of wires and tubes. She wanted to scream and find whomever did this to him. Her once peaceful existence now loomed with an uncertain future. The cold air of the waiting room chilled her to the bone and fear cloyed through her guts. *Where is your faith now?" an insidious whisper asked."
