The Stork Family of Berthelming (Wildlife Photography)

 
During my recent travels in France's Lorraine province I happened through the small hamlet of Berthelming. Other than being quite charming in a rural sort of way, the place appeared rather unremarkable. Until I got to the only traffic circle (i.e. roundabout for you Brits) in town, which also happens to be the address of the village's only eatery...

The restaurant is named „Le Grognon“ (the grump) and grumpy I will surely become if somebody doesn't feed me as noontime approaches. So I looked for and right at the restaurant, or else I might have overlooked the utility pole with the huge bird's nest on top.
 

Auf einem meiner Ausflüge in der lothringischen Provinz bin ich neulich durch den kleinen Weiler Berthelming (Bartolfingen) gefahren. Abgesehen davon, dass der Ort auf eine ländliche Art ganz charmant war, wirkte er eher unauffällig. Bis ich zum einzigen Kreisverkehr des Dörfchens kam, wo eben auch das einzige Restaurant des Dorfes zu finden ist...

Das Restaurant heißt „Le Grognon“ (der Griesgram). Das passt, denn ich kann ziemlich griesgrämig werden, wenn mich um die Mittagszeit nicht jemand ordentlich füttert. Also suchte ich nach einem Restaurant und schaute direkt darauf, sonst hätte ich den Strommast mit dem riesigen Vogelnest oben drauf vielleicht übersehen.
 

 

 

What a stroke of luck: the nest was actually populated by a family of white storks (Ciconia ciconia). Reason enough to skip that lunch and do some „Big Bird“ watching.
 

Was für ein Glücksfall: Das Nest war tatsächlich noch von einer Familie von Weißstörchen (Ciconia ciconia) bewohnt. Grund genug, das Mittagessen sausen zu lassen und die großen Vögel zu beobachten.
 

 

 

 

White storks are long-distance migrants. This couple was probably wintering in tropical Sub-Saharan Africa and returned to Lorraine via the Strait of Gibraltar, to breed right here in Berthelming.

Storks are carnivores and eat a wide range of animal prey, including insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, small mammals and small birds. So the pristine river marshes of the nearby Saar and the many ponds and meadows in Lorraine should provide a pretty varied diet.
 

Weißstörche sind Langstreckenmigranten. Dieses Paar überwinterte wahrscheinlich im tropischen Subsahara-Afrika und kehrte über die Straße von Gibraltar nach Lothringen zurück, um hier in Berthelming zu brüten.

Störche sind Fleischfresser und fressen eine Vielzahl von Beutetieren, darunter Insekten, Fische, Amphibien, Reptilien, kleine Säugetiere und kleine Vögel. Die unberührten Flusssümpfe der nahen Saar und die vielen Teiche und Wiesen in Lothringen sollten daher eine ziemlich abwechslungsreiche Ernährung ermöglichen.
