Friday Markets in Volcan, Panama - Another Reason I Love Volcan!

in panama •  6 years ago

Every Friday I attend two local markets in my town. One is a great place to meet other expats in the area and the other is a great place to get organic produce. I am happy that I live in a town that enables me to easily do both on the same day!

The first market is held at Mana Restaurant from 8:30-11 every Friday. Some people call it the gringo market while others call it the international market. If you talk about the market in Volcan on Friday, most people are going to know what you are talking about. It is usually full of gringos and it is a great place to meet others. Just this last week I met a couple I had previously met in Panama City who lives in Boquete!

Over the past few months, this market has really been growing. We now have tables from Morton's Bakery in Boquete as well as many others. I even saw another tourist Boquete Tuesday market vendor there this last week! You can find anything from plants, bananas (the best tasting ones around 12/$1), bread, salsa, BBQ, yogurt, spinach, cheese, Kombucha and more for sale every week! Some of the tables are there every week and some change or have different items to offer!

After this market, I head over to the organic produce market that is hosted at the Catholic church at 11:30 every Friday. This is also hosted by some local gringos, so it's also a great place to hang out and chat! Be sure to bring a bag to carry all your goodies out! This produce is brought in from Cerro Punta every Friday to be sold to anyone who shows up. A $.50 charge is added to each bill in order to cover the cost of using the room at the church.

There are always a lot of great items at this market and they change from week to week. Sometimes they'll have broccoli or cauliflower. At other times they will have zucchini and tree tomatoes. You just never know, but you always know that you'll leave with a great deal! I usually go for the carrots, potatoes, and tomatoes.

You grab what veggies you want and stick them in a bag. Then you get the clip board from the table and weigh each item while recording it on the paper. Take it to the front and they will check you out. You pay $.40 per pound of carrots, $.30 for potatoes and $.60 for tomatoes. I'm always happy to have 15 pounds of produce and only spend $7-8 usually! I have even met people who come in every other week from Boquete just to shop the organic produce market!

Check out part of my recent haul!
