My Favorite Thing About Being A Parent! Potter and ClaysteemCreated with Sketch.

I feel a great responsibility as a father to help shape my children into becoming responsible, caring, and independent adults.

This important role in their lives brings me great joy, and sometimes sleepless nights!

Potters and Parents Share Some Similarities

  1. A potter positions a ball of clay in the center of the potter's wheel in order to protect and mold the clay.

Parents should position their children in loving homes in order to protect them and guide them.

  2. A potter adjusts the speed of wheel as the clay becomes firm.

As parents watch their children grow and develop, they should adjust the speed of life, education, and training to meet a child's needs.

  3. A potter carefully shapes and guides the clay so that it can be useful and valued.

Parents should lovingly guide their children toward knowledge and love, so that their children can serve others and add value to their community.

  4. A potter smooths the outers surfaces into order to produced a finished piece.

Parents should help their children "refine the rough spots" and grow in maturity. Unrefined skills can be dangerous. Practiced and perfected skills lead to incredible change both for the child and in the lives of others.

  5. A potter pulls the wire through base of the clay and the wheel to separate the finished piece.

Parents must let go of their children. It is ok to let "the finish piece" walk away when we have invested so much time, love, and attention to molding the clay. They will return

Not A Perfect Analogy

Comparing potters and parents is not a perfect analogy, but it is a powerful one!

Our children our living pieces of clay. As parents, our guidance is essential and powerful. But our children need to be taught and equipped to take responsibility for shaping their own lives.

I think your view of raising children is a perfect analogy!

@reddust, thanks for the kind words. One thing about molding clay (or children for that matter) is that it is a hard, but rewarding.
