Judging parents

in parenting •  7 years ago

We say parenting isn't a competition but so often it seems that it is. Reading my 'mummy' groups and Facebook posts all I see is people wanting confirmation that they are doing it better or their life is harder or their children as smarter than everyone else.

My favourite from today has been a rant from a lady saying it makes her cringe when parents of neurotypical (everyday regular children) complain that life is hard because her Autistic child is so much harder.

What I would like to say to her, which i wont because she doesn't really need to hear it and not from my a virtual complete stranger that she has never met and will likely never meet is this:

All children can be difficult and everyone has the right to vent about how hard it is for them at that moment, it shouldn't matter if they are complaining that it took 10 minutes to get their kids shoes on this morning and you haven't been able to get shoes on your kid for over a year. In that moment they felt stressed and overwhelmed and wanted support, no mater what your circumstances are or how much worse you perceived your problems to be it doesn't give you the right to belittle
anyone else's experiences.

And yes I agree, by writing this I have just done exactly the same thing to say she doesn't have the right to cringe when yes she does but I would rather she left those thoughts in her own head and told us what she was dealing with without putting down everyone else who felt they had a right to complain too.
