The Sognefjord is the largest fjord in Norway and the longest and deepest in the world, measuring 240 kilometres in length and 1,308 metres at its deepest point. The high mountains and deep valleys on both sides of the fjord, with steep slopes at the bottom of the valley, grow vertically up to the summit at 1500 metres above sea level. The rock formations on both sides of the fjord are hard, consisting mainly of granite and gneiss, with a few interspersed limestone, dolomite and marble. Its tributary, the Najoui Fjord, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The beautiful town of Flemish is situated in the heart of the Aijuran Fjord.
