In the early days of the church, many questions regarding the doctrine of the faith were yet not resolved, and Christianity was mixing with pagan customs causing deep divisions in the first communities. It is in this situation that the apostle Paul writes his first Letter to the Corinthians, where he deals with various issues such as marriage and meals.
Although the apostle gives us many advises, Paul synthesizes his ideas in a very simple teaching: "´I have the right to do anything,´ you say—but not everything is beneficial. ´I have the right to do anything´—but not everything is constructive. No one should seek their own good , but the good of others.", 1 Corinthians 10:23-24.
Man is a fundamentally a free being, and Paul is explaining to us that beyond the prohibitions and norms established by a religion, man's conduct must be discerned according to the spirit, everything must be subjected to the freedom of the spirit: "Do not treat prophecies with contempt but test them all; hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil", 1 Thessalonians 5:20-22.
The nature of the world is temporary as explained by the apostle: "For this world in its present form is passing away", 1 Corinthians 7:31. This is why in every community, there are situations that are difficult to resolve. At some point, because of our human weaknesses, all of us no matter how well our intentions may be, we are subject to the error, to the sin.
But there is a rule that we must never break, we must always seek the good and the wisdom from above (the knowledge of the correct means to live), always fulfilling the commandment of love: "Love your neighbor as yourself", Mark 12:31.
