The Psalm 50 is a sapiential psalm that presents God as the only judge and savior of mankind. The Psalm is a reminder of man's persistence in error and evil and how God, through his wisdom and his eternal providence, acts in history. The Psalm is a claim from God to Israel for the fidelity to the covenant and that in the face of this men have to choose, God does not want appearances and masks but a pure heart to fulfill his covenant, the hymn explains. The law of Moses is more than the fulfillment of a set of orders or imperatives: "Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man", Ecclesiastes 12:13.
With these words the Psalm begins, praising the power of God and how in a metaphorical manner the Lord calls to carry out his judgment on men:
"The Mighty One, God, the LORD,
speaks and summons the earth
from the rising of the sun where it sets" Psalm 50:1.
God is the source of righteousness, that is, only God is righteous, and that is why men must fear him, and God calls his friends to judge Israel, so the Psalm continues:
"He summons the heavens above,
and the earth, that he may judge his people:
´Gather to me this consecrated people,
who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.´
And the heavens proclaim his righteousness,
for he is a God of justice" Psalm 50:4-6.
Then the Psalm continues by remembering the two paths, as the Psalm 1 teaches, and as in the story of Cain and Abel in the Book of Genesis, God approves only those sacrifices that are in accordance with his wisdom.
That is why the Psalm ends by teaching the importance of the correct path, the path that is in accordance with the goodness of the Lord, God saves and guides those who follow this path:
"Repent, all of you who forget me,
or I will tear you apart,
and no one will help you.
But giving thanks is a sacrifice that truly honors me.
If you keep to my path,
I will reveal to you the salvation of God" Psalm 50:22-23.
