The letter written by the apostle James is a letter that highlights the deep spiritual connection between the literary style of the sapiential books, like the Book of Proverbs, Ben Sira, and Wisdom, and the teachings of Jesus. The faith in the Son of Man is important, but this faith must be directed toward the search for the most important spiritual goods such as the fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion, and equanimity), mercy, and wisdom, otherwise, faith becomes blind and sterile, like faith without works. The life according to the flesh, that is, the life dominated by the concupiscence, by the cosmic laws of the universe like the law of sowing and reaping, does not lead man to blessedness. That is why the apostle James at the beginning of his epistle stated: "If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking" James 1:5.
The gift of faith, as taught in the parable of the sower, needs true fear to bear fruit, because this fear is the good soil on which the word of God rests. The teaching of the fear of God is then the foundation on which everything else is based, wisdom emerges like a hidden treasure when life is based on the correct principles. For this reason, James explained that faith does not produce immediate results but rather progressive and gradual ones, and to make this clear he used a well-known example: "See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains" James 5:7.
And the apostle, to emphasize all this, put forward a well-known example from the Bible as a model of man to follow for all believers with these words: "You remember how patient Job was and how the Lord finally helped him" James 5:11.
The apostle James ultimately put believers and faith in a spiritual war between correct and wrong; and thence the importance of praying insistently for grace, because the freedom to choose is there and no one can ignore this fact.
