Juke Box Time: Paul Simon - Kodachrome (HQ)

in paul-simon •  6 years ago  (edited)

I always loved this song, ha ha, never really understood the deeper meaning to it if there was any, but its a very gentle and cheerful tune. I guess, Paul Simon is portraying a character "that is not himself", like he usually does in his songs, this time its a dreamy young man, who dropped out of high-school, and apparently this man/boy has some issues with his mother stealing his Nikon camera or "Kodachrome"/film/photos...

-What do YOU think about this song and the lyrics?

-Was the boy/man in the song maybe taking photos of naked women?

-Is it just a covert advert for Kodachrome?

-Did I miss something?

Here's the first verse:

When I think back
On all the crap I learned in high school
It's a wonder
I can think at all
And though my lack of education
Hasn't hurt me none
I can read the writing on the wall

IDIOM:

The (hand)writing on the wall
The very apparent signs that something bad will happen in the future. The phrase comes from the Biblical story of Daniel, in which the prophet interprets some mysterious writing that a disembodied hand has inscribed on the palace wall, telling King Belshazzar that he will be overthrown. "Source"

You can find the song on youtube, some random person uploaded it without permission... The song was released in May 19, 1973, first as a single and then on the album:"There Goes Rhymin' Simon" that same year.

ha! I liked that song back then, loved Simon and Garfunkel but didn't understand the song at all, figured it had something to do with drugs. lol. great job mysteryman

Hello @Janton!
Maybe you are right, the song is from 1973 after all.
Maybe he kept his "stuff" in one of those small canisters for film?

hahaha! thanks for the beer friendly -fenix. ya know when I was a kid before I got into pistols and rifles I used to take those metal film canisters, because my dad was a photographer and had lots of em around, and make bombs out of them.

I would take regular firecrackers and unwrap them and pour the gun powder into one of those canisters until it was full, then drill a hole in the lid and put in a fuse and screw the lid on.

man was that an explosion! that was like a third of a stick of dynamite going off, we blew up alot of stuff with those homemade bombs! lol.

Oh really, thats a bit crazy, hope you still have your hands and fingers intact?
Cheers!

haha! no that wasn't crazy by Kansas nor Texas standards, now when I got hold of guns it got a little crazy! lol

Yeah, I guess that would be fairly normal growing up in Texas.
/FF

haha! yes sir we're a wild bunch of gun-slinging maniacs who like to shoot things up and blow things to smitherines, you should here it around here at Christmas time and the 4th of July, it's like a war zone.

Yeah, trust me I can almost hear it from here! Texas is famous for being the place where people really enjoy their firearms the most (in the world maybe?). =)

Cheers!

Great choice for the Jukebox. It's one of those songs that I never much cared about the 'deeper meaning'.

I suppose it's possible he was taking naked pictures of girls. Wouldn't we all have wanted to in 1973? I certainly wouldn't have gotten married that year if I had been.

I don't think it was his mother with the film. I think it was his Momma, slang for girlfriend in those days. Maybe he took naked pictures of her? The problem was you had to develop them yourself or you'd go straight to jail for pornography. Which isn't the reason I had a dark room...

Too much talk and not enough respect. Thanks for a warm and fuzzy memory.

Hello @bigtom13 nice to see you commenting here!

Hmm, yeah, you are probably right,( I was not around in 1973)... But I can imagine there was plenty of naked girls around "free love" and all that... =)

About the "momma" part, it makes more sense... He wanted to keep the photos and his "momma" took them away, maybe she was afraid they might end up some place... Anyway what do I know, but he paints a warm and colorful picture with this song, that is for sure...
=)
