Depression is terrible and painful not only for the patient who suffers from it, but also for its closest. It's hard to help a person who, in many cases, does not realize he needs help, especially if he behaves irritably, apathetic, and especially if he starts suicidal tendencies. The first, difficult but necessary step is to target it to adequate professional help - this is the surest way to put an end to the pain and to speed up the return of the person you once knew. A person with depression, who usually asks if he can make the day, rarely has the power to take this step alone.
Depression is a common illness, so many people can offer you experience and support. Start by educating yourself about symptoms and signs, age and gender specifics, and different treatment options. Also consult your GP to get professional advice.

Getting Started and Treating

If there are suicidal tendencies, seek help immediately. Do not delay for a minute. Help your loved one understand that he is suffering from a disease that can be treated.
If the person in need of assistance does not have suicidal tendencies, be patient and supportive, let him know that you are facing when he is ready for the next step.
Select a doctor and arrange an appointment instead.
Go with him.
Ensure that he adheres to treatment.
Never neglect any word or hint of suicide. If you have found that your loved one is in depression, talk to him and try to find out if he or she has ever had a desire to do something wrong. Research has shown that suicidal questions in no way encourage attempts to commit suicide.

During and after treatment

Show support and understanding.
Encourage every small step.
Speak, and especially listen.
Do not overlook the feelings of your close man,
Do not judge or behave as if you "know" how it feels. You do not know.
Since depression often makes people feel exhausted and helpless, they need others to deal with even the most elementary life challenges. Recovery does not happen overnight, but in the end, 85 to 90% of patients recover fully, with appropriate treatment. Do not forget this, and do not stop assuring the person next to you that he will feel better with time.

Help him rediscover the joys of life ... gradually

  • offer entertainment and company (for example, go out for a walk, cinema, see common friends)
  • encourage him to deal with the things that have previously given him pleasure
  • if you refuse your invitations (which will happen), be cautious, but do not force a person with depression to do too much at the start of treatment.
