I understand why you wouldn't want to seal the pond with plastic, but why do you not want to use clay?

Clay is an expensive import and hard to spread evenly without heavy equipment (our pond would need at least 1 ton of clay). If you plan on getting into the pond, your weight on the clay bottom can pierce through the seal and create leaks.
