A couple frosty homestead pictures

in permaculture •  6 years ago

The other day I snapped a couple pictures that I wanted to share. I've had some bigger posts that I needed to run, so it got pushed back. More homestead observations.

Uppening is happening all over. This is in the area by the first compost pile. I've never noticed uppening over here before, and here it comes with the compost.

Same worm pile, different angle. I like this shot a lot.

Frost and frozen dew drops on a comfrey leaf. Comfrey seems a good plant to catch water from the air; I often find it covered in dew. I wonder if that means I should plant a lot more of it over here...

Look at that. That's in the middle swale, where we dumped the 300 gallon water tote during the rain last weekend (preparing for a future project). The soil beneath the grass line there is moist, while the area above it is dry. I'm going to pile up more leaves here. The downhill side of the berm is mulched and moisture is retained underneath. This side is bare and is dry. More leaves seems a simple enough solution when you've still got around 150 surplus bags of leaves.

Somewhat hard to discern, but this is the area formerly known as the long south bed. There's a whole lot of uppening here. In the swale berm above, you can see the color of the soil in the south project. The soil in the LSB, which was sheet mulched with cardboard, leaves, grass clippings, and soil is so much darker, softer, and fluffier after just those four light layers.

Today I finished mulching the leaves that have fallen in the back yard. I took the night off tonight so I can be home and useful tomorrow, so I'll probably get some work done. The front yard needs mulched too. Don't be surprised if I start posting a lot more in the coming weeks, I'm needing to get up my SBD so I can buy some stuff on @homesteaderscoop. Plans are being made ;) I wish Coe's Comfrey accepted SBD... I'm gonna reach out to him about that real quick.

Side note: can anyone recommend a GOOD and FREE planting guide? Looking to make an organized plan now so I'm not planting in May again ;)

Thanks for reading and observing our homestead with me.

I ended up creating my own, because I have a unique micro climate here. If I followed the recommendations of the farm 300' away, I'd lose a lot to frost in spring and fall every year.

I don't know if you have frosts, killing frosts down there. The rule of thumb is to plant some things X number of weeks before last frost and X number of things after last frost. When I lived in Orlando, we planted in February...

I could send my charts and you could adapt them for your area...

Ooh, yes please! Just a picture of it in discord would be great, I'm not even really sure where to start.

There are 3 of them, as word docs. I will see if they will up load....

Love the frozen dew drops on the leaf, beautiful!

Thanks! One of my favorite photos. A couple days earlier, there was a bit of dew on the leaf. Got a picture of it too.

Very nice Nate!

Howdy sir natonsteemit! You only have 150 bags of leaves left? haha! that's amazing, you need a bigger yard! Looks like you're making progress though even through the cold weather.

There's less every day, we're using so much for compost! Aiming for the best soil in the neighborhood. I think we'll try and save about 50 for the chickens. That way we can add a bag a week.
