Help Me Build a Regenerative Permaculture System with Chickens

Animals are an integral part of ecological systems. They reduce waste streams, increase soil fertility, regulate pest cycles, and feed people. In a small scale sustainable system, chickens may be the animals that are best suited to that role.

A few weeks ago, my permaculture-raised flock of chickens was ransacked by a predator. Of my thirteen hard working laying hens, none are now left alive. A more secure system is of immediate importance, and I'm taking action on that front already. I'm asking for help reestablishing my flock. It'll be a costly process, in the area of $150-200 for the birds, and I'd like to see how much of that I can crowdfund on steem.

The birds will be raised by me in my young permaculture food forest. It is a natural ecosystem that I've planted for many reasons including education, ecological action, and a sustainable food source for my family and our animals. I mention all this so you can know what you're supporting if you choose to do so. These birds will have a good life here for certain.

Any funds raised in this process will be put towards the purchase of fifteen young chickens and any incidental upgrades that come along in the process. That number of birds will supply my family with enough eggs to eat and some to share with others. We'll be including a rooster for long term sustainability as well.

I intend to document the whole process on steem so people can follow the progress and see what their donations are doing (I've really missed posting chicken photos). My timeline for buying the birds is the last week in July. We've got a family vacation the week before that, and I want to consistently be home for a while to help the birds get acclimated to their new coop and food forest. I'd also be buying them in batches of 3-6 birds. The goal here is to keep from quickly losing a whole flock to a single predator attack. If the predator were to revisit early in the process, loss of investment would be minimal. I am also increasing coop security to minimize any threats.

I am considering submitting this project as a Fundition proposal, but I'm undecided. I'm not sure how to do so or if it would be accepted there.
