A few days ago I bought some worms from Wally World in hopes of starting a vermicomposting colony. I figured $3 is a good price for something that'll help us close our waste cycle a bit better while helping increase fertility.
$3 for what I assumed would be about ten worms didn't sound awful. There are plenty of places online with live arrival guarantees and worms by the pound, but these ones were less than the usual $20 per thousand worms and they'd be in hand now, despite the internet worms being cheaper per worm.
Well, I tried counting them and there's well over 30 worms in that little container. I've read that a colony can double in number in a month, and I'm not in a huge hurry right now. I mixed sandy soil, whole leaves, and mostly composted leaf bits in the bucket until it was fluffy, then added the worms.
Lettuce on top that would usually be trashed or composted. The family has been instructed to up their potato and banana peel production for the sake of the worms. Little do they know that I'm hoping the fresh fruits and veggies will also serve to increase their health.
I'm such a schemer...
Be blessed.
Be fruitful.
Stay relevant.
Nate.

I have yet to step into the world of vermicomposting... but my raised beds do have their fare number, so I will forego it for the next few more years... maybe once we have moved and I have a longer seasonal garden I will consider it.
Looks like your colony will do well!
