I'm writing to you live from the County number 20 which is Kirinyaga in Kenya, Africa. I'm not speaking, but I am putting on a workshop with @hustlehacker and @steamboy. The theme will be Blockchain, Internet Of Things, and Personal Branding.
Obviously (or maybe not so), I'm doing the portion on personal branding. I'm not an expert, but I think I understand this space better than most. Personal branding, in my opinion, isn't particularly difficult. However, if you want to do it correctly, you need to be willing to do one thing.
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of Personal Branding
The good thing about personal branding is that I get to impact the world and make a living simply being as myself.
The bad thing about this is that I can't be an asshole. That's cool though. A component of me becoming the person I am today is know that if I behave in a questionable manner, the whole world can see it. This would ultimately hurt my bottom line.
I'm not saying this is the only reason I don't reek havoc on the world. I'm only saying that an external moral compass can be just as valuable as an internal one when it comes to making the world a better place.
The ugly thing about personal branding is the position that it sometimes puts the people around me in. I have to be honest with my readers. Sometimes my family (members of which are followers to my blog post) don't like my interpretation of them or our history. While I'm free, I have to think about my girlfriend and her having a day job, should anyone decide to launch a proxy attack.
You also have to deal with long time friends not completely understanding what you're doing. Most of them have been cool, but I had one actually say to me "I have to troll you. I can't let you just say the things you say on social media." I don't see it as hate. Just a complete misunderstanding of this game.
Tough Skin Or Bust
Ultimately, the rewards of being yourself outweigh the risk. I've always said that I haven't seen anyone get banned from a social media platform who didn't ask for it. I'm not saying we have to agree their banning was the appropriate step, but when you play in someone else's house, you're playing by their rules.
Free speech is about the government. Not social media. Unless, of course, you want the government involved in it. Of course, no one does but people want their protection. They want the best of both worlds.
The brings me nicely to the meta-article of this article: Use social media to make you a better person. Period
I don't have a beef either way with anons, but one thing that being transparent on the internet does is it motivates me to act with dignity. Now, before you start talking about needing an outlet to vent, only in this soft-ass society would we think bitching on Steemit is venting.
People used to take walks. Or exercise. God forbid you use your entire body instead of just your fingers.
I personally love owning my words and actions. I know that I'm better for it. This is the real value of personal branding.
