I have noticed a trend here that involves down voting posts that include the word "steemit" as a tag.
For those of us who are new to creating content on this platform it becomes a problem because our posts are less likely to be seen and it could potentially decrease our reputation score.
No where have I seen any posts warning new comers of these issues, but I wanted to take the opportunity to raise awareness on the topic. I had to make a point in searching information about down voting and I noticed that others have had the same problem.
Why don't those who are considered whales point this out to those who are new to the platform? No, you guys wait for people to figure it out for themselves instead, and make a point of policing content.
Policing content here in my opinion is the same as censoring because you and I both know that if you downvote often enough the account will lose reputation, the content will less likely be read and will be lost in the stream of thousands of other bits of content uploaded daily.
STOP being so petty and anal retentive if you want the site to grow!
You need to realize that not everyone has had as much experience with the site as you have, don't have the same power and influence on the platform and are doing their best to help promote, provide useful information, and put in the effort to invest our steem dollars into this place instead of cashing out.
Do you want the site to gain in momentum?
Then stop being a greedy, self centered asshole to those of us who do care!
For many of us, it's not all about the $$!
Advice to New Content Creators
My advice is to be diligently mindful of your tagging process and especially consider taking more time to perfect your layout and formatting style.
Posts that do not include photos, that don't use bold and italics often times go unnoticed and do not receive the attention they deserve, so we should learn how to format effectively and find royalty free images to add to our posts.
You want to make sure you add plenty of GIFs, as well! The whales need more cowbell and the only way to get it is to search for more GIFs and royalty free images! Be more creative by using flashy text and color!
I recently read somewhere that there's a certain member who gets "peeved" if photos aren't centered! Ha, that's hilarious to hear that a person's main focus is on whether a photo is placed strategically!
Rather than valuing an article's contents you would downvote because you didn't like a photo, didn't think the person formatted to your preference or maybe they didn't include a photo at all!
This is what you sound like to those of us who are new, truthfully - "Oh, I have nothing better to do with my time than search through posts and make a point in teaching this "newbie" that things have to be done my way or else!"
How much more petty can you get?
I read the content here, instead of being one of those who would rather look at the "pretty pictures" I find the most value in useful information and building community not throwing my pseudo intellectualism around on those who are smaller than myself and pretending I'm the most powerful Steemian of them all!
Stop abusing your power and learn to help those who are less knowledgeable and experienced.
Oh and another thing, make sure you provide enough spaces between paragraphs because the whales don't like blocked text!!
Literally LOL'ed at the cowbell comment. Definitely sucks to get down-voted for a petty reason. This is The Wild West or the Lord of the Flies island, if either of those were a social media site. It's somewhat decentralized and anyone has the potential to become a powerful "Whale" here. How they use that power once they get it is their prerogative. It's only natural that some of those who gain power in any field or arena will then utilize that power to gain more power. The Steemit platform/community is no different in that regard.
Steemit is an interesting and exciting experiment, that's for sure! I dig it.
(P.S. I upvoted this post. Now you'll be 3 cents more powerful in a week from now. Use it wisely! haha)

Thank so much for the comment! I appreciate everyone who gives my content attention because it helps to keep me motivated to create more.
If I were to ever become a whale I would use my influence to help newcomers also grow financially, and help them to network with others so that Steemit would continue to be a place people would enjoy sharing ideas and forming long lasting friendships.
I certainly would not intentionally make life difficult for anyone especially little planktons such as myself. See I'm not even a minnow yet, just an insignificant blip on the radar.
I absolutely love this place and am glad friends from other social media networks such as yourself are here to interact! Thank you so much!

I'm still learning about the whole SteemPower, whales and how they influence things and all sorts of other things on here. I do find some users treat noobs as though they should be psychic, but, for the most part I've found most people to be super helpful and encouraging!

I am forever learning and just read a great article from one of the witnesses here that for the newcomers it is best to focus on commenting instead of worrying so much about authorship. As a matter of fact, commenting has been where I have generated the majority of my sbd. So for now I am going to do just that, comment on whatever I like and do it as often as I can. Mind you, I want to share my honest ideas, thoughts and opinions instead of the usual, "great post." spam comment that's often seen on the platform.
Focus on building your SP to at least 1,000 and then writing is what I heard pays off in the long term. It's vital that we learn how to do things the right way, and saves time!

I say do both. No harm in writing your own posts. You probably won't make much off them to begin with, but just keep going and it will increase. When I have the time, my ideal strategy is to always have at least two posts in my Steemit blog within the past seven days and to make a lot of sincere comments on other people's posts. That way if anyone seeing my comment decides to check out my profile they will have something current to interact with. It's what I've have seen the best results from. Also, someone viewing your profile is going to be more likely to Follow you if you are posting regularly. What's the point of Following someone who isn't posting?

You have a point and I probably should stick to doing both, but place more emphasis on commenting at first. I have noticed that I don't make as much on my own content but earn more sbd on commenting. I was wondering if sp has anything to do with this and if the system is set up to pay those with lower sp less off of their posts. So, I will definitely continue posting instead of limiting my interactions. Thanks for your advice.

@nexusvortex777 I remember getting reprimanded for using the steemit tag, early on. :-) I didn't realize that I was not using the tag correctly. I thought it was all good.

Yeah, I think they consider that tag abuse or at least that's my understanding from what I've read on the subject thus far.
I am consistently looking for ways to help newcomers benefit and use the site effectively, as well as helping me learn as I go along.
I love this site and am eager to see it evolve!
