5 Facts About Cat Teeth You Need To Know

in pets •  5 years ago

Greetings Paw friends, today we will share 5 facts that you need to know about you cat’s teeth. We hope it will help you to understand more about your cat’s dental health and care.

1. How many teeth do cats have?

Kittens have 26 teeth during their initial growth stage. 12 deciduous incisors (6 on the top and bottom), 4 baby canine teeth (2 on the top and bottom), and 10 premolars (6 on, 4 on the bottom).

From 12 weeks to 21 weeks after birth, cats will enter the permanent tooth stage, with 30 teeth including 12 incisors, 4 canine, and 10 premolars (6 on top, 4 at bottom), 4 premolars. That’s a lot of teeth, all the better to chew food with!

2. Permanent cat teeth grow next to falling baby teeth

For humans, new teeth grow out where old teeth fall off. For cats, permanent teeth grow alongside the primary teeth. As the adult teeth grow, the roots of the baby teeth will ‘melt’ and the deciduous teeth will disappear completely.

3. Kittens may swallow the teeth as they fall out

As a cat owner,it’s generally difficult to find the teeth that a cat has lost. Even if we know when a cat's teeth will fall, it's hard to find. In most cases, the cat will swallow it. Don't worry if you encounter this situation, swallowed teeth will happily be processed through a cat’s digestive system, never to be seen again,

If you are lucky enough to get a tooth that has fallen out before it has been swallowed, you might want to keep this as a souvenir. It’s a rare commodity for any pet owner and carries great sentimental value.

4. Kittens will bleed when their baby teeth fall out

Arrival of adult teething may induce bouts of mild gingivitis. Getting a waft of your cat’s breath during this time may yield bad breath and signs of inflamed gums. If the root of the issue is teething, symptoms should clear within a few weeks. They may actively chew, drool or experience bleeding gums. Comfort and patience is needed during this time.

Kitten milk teeth may cause bleeding gums. If this happens, don't worry too much, it usually stops in about 5 minutes. You should keep monitoring your cat’s condition, if the blood doesn’t stop, you should seek advice from your veterinarian and perhaps arrange a visit as soon as possible. It’s better to be safe than sorry!

5. Brush teeth for your cat regularly

Just like we humans brush our teeth every day, cats also need to clean their teeth. You should brush your cat’s teeth every 2-3 days. Brushing their teeth not only keeps your cat healthy, it also extends a cat’s life.

Anyone who has cared for a cat knows that even those kitties familiar with the habit of teeth brushing will show resistance when it’s time for a clean. If you’re struggling to clean your cat’s teeth, assistive tools will help improve your cat’s health. A Natural Silvervine Catnip Toy can clean their teeth by chewing and playing. A Cat Grooming Bag may also help you keep your kitten safely in place while treatment applied, avoiding harm to them and yourself.
