Change in Seasons and Change in Cat Coats

Monitor You Cat’s Coat

Cats are very much all about hygiene. You’ll often find them elegantly grooming away in their own time. They are meticulous in their grooming habits but it’s important to keep an eye on over grooming. Constant grooming in a particular area may indicate an injury that needs attention. Having a closer look to ensure there are no visible breaks to the skin is important, allergies are also possible. Visiting a vet to address excessive grooming is advised. Most of the time a cat will shed a little hair and actively find ways to remove loose hanging fibres. It’s best to regularly groom your cat to remove hanging fur and prevent hairballs.

Be Ready For Change

Keeping an eye on coat quality and amount of hair being shed is important. If your cat suddenly starts to lose an unusual amount of fur, it may be an indication of stress or other health related issues. Sources of stress at home, worms and other health conditions can all contribute to degradation in coat quality and should be assessed by a local professional. Losing hair isn’t always bad though. Seasonal changes in weather can mean it’s almost time for an annual coat change that most cats will observe. Regardless of coat type, your cat will change its coat but recognising is highly situational.

Spring Blossoms and New Coats

Cats are always shedding hair and a change in coat is important to provide adequate warmth or heat dissipation depending on the weather. Cats who mostly stay at home will shed throughout the entire year and most owners won’t take notice as they will continuously groom and monitor level of shedding regularly due to being season agnostic. If your cat has exposure to the outdoors or general sunlight, their coat will most likely shed as Spring approaches. Just as new buds shoot in the Spring, your cat will be getting for a toasty summer. Trading their dense and heavy coats that have kept them warm, they will be ready for fine summer weather. This new coat will be light and allow better ventilation when the heat wave hits.

Groom, Groom and Groom Some More

During coat changes it’s important to support your cat to ensure that the increased level of hair doesn’t cling on their skin. Using a grooming brush suitable for your cat, be sure to regularly remove dead hair to avoid accumulation in the digestive system. We like to allow our cats to graze on a little grass to help ease digestion and bring up anything that may be accumulating such as excess hair. Meow!
