Dragon has been with us for not quite a week now and he is already so, so loved.
Two different women communicated with me about him when I said I would take him after seeing his picture including the words "free cat".
The first woman told me they were giving him away because their older cat didn't like him much, and she is dying, so they want to give her a peaceful passing.
The second woman said it was because he is not a lap cat and she needs a lap cat. They apparently couldn't keep their stories straight.
Dragon got lucky. Not every pet given away for free will. Many will end up as bait animals in fighting rings. Many will get no vet needs taken care of. After all, they can just get another free one when the first one dies.
Please do not do that to your pets. Pets are family, they are a life long responsibility, not something to pass along when it gets out of kitten or puppy age.
Do your research BEFORE getting a pet. Kittens can be holy freaking terrors. If you aren't getting two (two kittens is recommended for the kitty's well being) you are going to have to be involved in making sure kitty gets enough physical and mental stimulation.
A bored kitty is a destructive kitty. A kitty unsocialized from an early age is how you get "asshole cats" who don't want to be your lap ornament.
In the short time we have had him, Dragon has shown a ton of personality. He loves the dogs, will follow me from room to room demanding attention and loves to purr for a good loving session.
He gets handled and loved on every day and already he has grown comfortable being held for a minute instead of instantly struggling to get away.
Oh yeah, and he gets a LOT of play time. He's still just a baby, 10 months old.
I'm 33 years old and have always had cats in my life. Never once have I had a mean cat. Learn to read their language, learn to behave in a respectful way. Enjoy them and give them a reason to enjoy you.
Adopt your next pet intead of shopping. And support people like @animalshelter who dedicate themselves toward helping animals.
Thanks for reading! Sorry it got a little preachy. ;)
@hickorymack this is our moral duty to help the pet animals, pet animals give respect in return if you respected. They love the person who take care of them. Very good post..

Awww Dragon! 😺 Such a cutie.
My first cat ever, Butterscotch, came to me when I was 11 and a kid I knew from school was going door to door asking if people wanted a kitten from a litter their cat had had. The 80s version of a Craigslist ad!
My second cat, Deidre, I found up the hood of a car in the parking lot of my apartment complex, meowing her kitten head off in fear (they were mowing the lawn of the apartments).
Maggie, my third cat, I adopted from a no-kill shelter with very stringent standards (they called references I provided, and my super to make sure I was allowed cats in my apartment, for example).
Yuan, my fourth, I adopted from a county shelter via PetSmart, where I first met him. I was there to buy food for Maggie and Deidre, and my friend who was with me, said, let's go look at the cats! The only time that friend and I ever went to PetSmart together. Yuan got THREE applicants - I was #2 - and #1 dropped out because on the same day, his wife went to the shelter and adopted another cat. It was fate for Yuan and I to be together. 💚

People who don't have time for animals would be best doing them a favour and not getting them in the first place. Sounds like Dragon is going to be very happy with you!

I don't think your post is preachy, if anything it needs to be, not enough people care properly for animals and go in blindly. I have adopted an adult cat once... That didn't go good. The person who had wasn't social with him. I was not able to keep him as he wasn't nice with the kids. Not his fault but had to protect my kids as well. Lesson learned.

We have 6 cats at the farm, with 2 being on the elderly side. (One just passed a few months back....and that was difficult, for sure.)
Our furry friends are so important, aren't they? We have one dog and 2 cats that were dumped (and not fixed) on our country property. We kept them. There have been many that were too wild and probably were eaten by coyotes. I tried but they ran fast before I could even open the door with food or water.
Right now we have a cat that comes up to our front picture window after dark, and our cats hiss at him. At first I thought that they were fighting with each other but then quickly realized it was a cat outside. As soon as I approach the window he is gone like a flash. My hope is that I can at least get him a secure home in our barn and some supplemental food and water. He survived our Kansas winter (which was harsh) this year.
