A new temple and more doggy skin problems

in pets •  4 years ago

If you go to just about any temple in Thailand you are going to notice that all of them seem to have a bunch of dogs and cats hanging around at them and around them. This is because the temple grounds is where they call home. I am not familiar with what the process is called but it is traditional to drop off unwanted animals that you can't take care of for whatever reason at a temple. In return for the monks looking after and feeding the dogs, the person who dropped the dog or cat off there in the first place is meant to return and provide the temple with alms in the form of money and / or good for the monks.

Unfortunately as of late a lot of temples have been shut so a lot of the care that the dogs would normally get has been slim pickins' just like for the dogs that are anywhere else in the country.

When we take on a new temple project to work with the monks for the well-being of their animals we expect to find a bunch of mange-ridden dogs and that is exactly what we found at Klong Yai Temple.

To be fair, these dogs aren't really in terrible shape, but if left untreated they will eventually get there. Upon closer inspection we found that most of them had a number of the usual suspect parasites in fleas, ticks, and mange. Thankfully we have a sponsor that has been providing us with loads of Bravecto at a reduced cost whereas otherwise we would not be able to afford to help.

There are a lot of products that do what Bravecto does and it is just a brand name that happens to be cheaper here in Thailand than a lot of the others. They all do essentially the same thing and this is good because in many other aspects of life cheaper normally means less effective but that has not been our experience with Bravecto.

Most of the dogs we encounter don't even have to be tricked into eating it either because the manufacturer does something so that it tastes good kind of like one of those soft treats that are used around the world as a reward for dogs. My own dogs have become slightly more finnicky over the years as far as what they will eat but even they love this stuff.

Unfortunately for now, we do not have the funds to perform sterilizations on any of the dogs at this new temple, but the idea is to come back once we do and start the process there as well. It only takes 1 female to make 7 more homeless dogs after all and even though they don't complain about it, the monks are already stretched to the limit as well and there is only so much food to go around both for themselves and for the animals. We did drop off a big bag of dog kibbles and established a relationship with the monks and are hopeful they will keep us updated on the dogs' progress.

This is a rather small temple and it only had around 10 dogs in it and we treated all the ones with skin problems using Bravecto. They gobbled it up right away and all of the dogs were friendly... These are all good signs. We look forward to working with this temple in the future as it does seem like a very manageable environment.

In the meantime I once again want to ask everyone out the to adopt shelter and rescue dogs rather than buying designer dogs. Also, please donate your time and / or money to your local animal rescue. They are located all over the world and this help is desperately needed everywhere.

There are some institutions that help feed these animals, as I hear the news they continue to do so despite the pandemic, but I have also seen several abandoned animals because people do not have enough to feed them, so life is complicated for everyone.
Happy monday and take care

Well that basically describes us! You just gave me a great idea accidentally. I am going to contact the local news station and see if they could do a piece on us. Maybe there are some animal lovers out there in our community that don't know we exist. We are a small operation after all and this could possibly be a great publicity opportunity. Thanks!
